Free UK TV, Yes That's Right Freeeee TV !!!!

Hi aussiedreamz, can you tell me what kind of internet plan you have?

I haven't looked at your solution as I primarily get my UK TV from Usenet, downloaded off peak. And before anyone raises issues with this I can't see a problem for material which is freely available for streaming anyway.

Anyway I am on 200GB per month (60 peak, 140 off peak) and I'm even finding this pretty restrictive having come from unlimited downloads with Virgin Media. Are there any truly unlimited plans (without ridiculous throttling) available over here?

Does your method allow you to view/download off peak? Do you know what sort of size a typical streamed programme is? Via Usenet or torrents my current programmes are around 250 to 350Mb per half hour.

The ITV streams are quite low resolution so after a quick search on the net the answer came back a stream should be somewhere in the region of 90 Mb's and 150 Mb's per half hour. With this setup you can watch ITV programmes at any time of the day or night it's your choice as the programmes are available for 30 days from when they first aired on the ITV network, they do show older programmes like Frost, Morse, Rising Damp which don't seem to have the same 30 day time limit.

If you prefer to download a programme instead of streaming then I have recently put some software on my site which enables you to download the programmes to your computer. Just copy & paste the URL of the ITV programme into the software, hit the record button and let it do it's thing. I couldn't tell you what sort of Mb's per download are as I haven't got round to testing it properly as I am reaching the end of my internet quota for this month...

If you have a Sky box and internet connection you could try a Slingbox, you plug your Sky cable into the Slingbox and the Slingbox into your modem and load the software onto your PC or laptop and away you go, where ever you are in the world you can watch Tv through your Skybox, you can even change channels...

I don't personally own one so can't say if there any good or not...

Hey

I just tried that website and it wouldn't let me on either so I am assuming it no longer exists or is down temporarily...

Anyway. Since being in Aus I have too had to find a way of actually getting the UK TV. The best way that I have found is to get a subscription to Identity Cloaker. All you have to do is pay for a subscription (10 days up to a year at a time I think you can do) and then you just have to download a small program, open that before you open your browser, put in a code and a username and password, then you're good to go.

And it really worked. Plus it does all the work for you, just have to make sure you select the United Kingdom proxy from the list and then that's all.

I recommend checking it out.

Personally, I've never had much success with vpn's & proxies. Due to the speed of my broadband (both here & when I was in Melbourne), using a middleman (vpn/proxy) resulted in being able to access iplayer etc, but the speed just wasn't fast enough to stream a program in real time.

I've found most things I want to watch are shown by the ABC or UKTV anyway and I've also been playing around with iplayer on the ipad the last week and that's working flawlessly with no speed issues.

I'm delighted with the iPad BBC iplayer app, it can only get bigger and better. Hopefully channel 4 will cotton on to the expat Market and introduce 4od on a similar basis. The great thing the iplayer app is the ability to view and/or download whole series of stuff

If your not on a plan with IC try Iportal easier to use and 30 quid cheaper per year. I have been using it now for two years without a problem, IC i tried once but it kept dropping out as servers changed. IPortal is a continuous server.

Hope this helps

Does iportal allow you to watch the live channels Bbc1,2 Etc on Iplayer?

Gives you all UK tv So easy just one press to connect on a permanent server. I have put many onto it & they were surprised how easy it is.

You can watch it live or Iplayer. You are allowed to have Iportal on 2 computers, so in the afternoon I watch the BBC1 breakfast live on my laptop, and connect to my TV with a 1 metre HDMI cable. Big big screen live.

Hi Aussiedreamz, your website link doesn't work. I wanted to be able to watch ITV 1 here in OZ. Do you have another link to the details? Cheers, Rik.

Cheers. So it's legal then to use it for watching iplayer and 4od??

I just saw this and thought I'd reply.

The BBC have the entire breakdown of the legal ins and outs of using iPlayer. Bottom line is no, its not really legal. Its a way round things, using a VPN, to mask your actual IP. If you tried to log in to watch it with an Aussie IP it wouldn't let you. Hence people using a VPN to make it appear they are in the UK.

The BBC website says the following, make of it what you will :)

3.2 How you may NOT use BBC Online Services

3.2.1 If you are outside the UK

You may not access, view and/or listen to certain parts of BBC Content (such as video or live television services) using BBC Online Services if you are outside the UK, although you may, in accordance with the Terms, access and view bbc.co.uk or other websites and listen to some (but not all) BBC radio content. The types of BBC Content that may be available outside the UK will usually depend on the BBC's agreements with the persons who own rights in such content.

3.2.2 If you do not have a valid television licence

You may not watch television programmes using BBC Online Services on any device (including mobile phones, "smart" phones or devices, laptops, tablets and personal computers) at the same time (or virtually the same time) as the programmes are being broadcast, simulcast or otherwise made available by the BBC on television, unless you have a valid television licence. For more information on this requirement please see the Frequently Asked Questions or you can contact TV Licensing by calling 0870 241 5590 or by visiting http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk.

3.2.3 General restrictions on how you may use BBC Online Services to access, view and/or listen to BBC Content

(e) You may not directly or indirectly charge others for accessing, viewing or listening to any BBC Content, or commercialise or attempt to re-sell the BBC Content in any way, which includes advertising or selling any goods and services which offer BBC Content including any third party software applications.

Read it all here http://www.bbc.co.uk/terms/personal.shtml There is also a business user section.

BBC have made some areas of iPlayer accesible to overseas countries and are opening up the pay scheme still I think. But the main UK content of iPlayer, as we the British licence payers can view isn't really intended to be viewed outside the UK.

Although the ITV and C4 players are slightly different, basically, again, if they didn't mind you watching it all from Aus via an Aus IP, you'd be able to straight off. As people need a VPN to hide their own IP and make it appear as if they are in the UK, you can take from that that again, it isn't exactly legal and rosy.

Having said all that, the fact is these companies won't catch most people using a VPN out. People get in via the back door and its hard to monitor it all.

I know I've said to you elsewhere, but hubby and I would happily pay legally to be able to have access to an overseas form of iPlayer. Its an excellent service and I don't begrudge the BBC a penny of my licence fee.

Also consider what aspects of data your VPN provider can access and store while you watch/browse........

Sometimes people are so keen to watch a bit of telly, they forget to read the small print or even look into how much these companies can snoop/eavesdrop when you use them.
