Greetings all

My wife, 2 kids (and one on the way) are looking to come out to your fab country. Our situation in a nuthshell is as follows:

I do have distant relations in Aus (to be precise, my Grandmother's sister's son - suppose that makes me a distant nephew?)

I am a credit manager, will 10+ years experience, a full Member of the Institute of Credit management in the UK (There is an Aussie Institute, not affiliated to the UK one).

We could raise about £60 - £80k so could make the $100k bond deposit no problem.

I am very confused as to the initial steps. My brother in law has spent a long time researching all things visa related, and seems to think my best bet would be to spend the next couple of months trying to get my job recognised and coming as a skilled migrant. My Dad, on the other hand, thinks it would be better to go for the family in Aus angle

Either way, what should we be looking to do FIRST. Get an application form and fill it in? Is it a requirement to use an agent in our situation? Or should I get my job recognised (if so - how??).

We are 100% determined to do this, and to do it as quickly as feasible, but we don't want to throw a lot of money at agents if there really is no need to, and we want to do it right from the start.

any help very gratefully received

Hi Matt & Kathryn,

Before engaging an agent and spending money, I would try contacting one either by email or 'phone as they often give you some initial free advice before you decide whether to go ahead with their services. It might also be worth you while to even pay to see one for an inital consultation/chat to see what options are available to you. If you explain your circumstances they might tell you the best way of entering the country. Alternatively you should look on the immigration site and work out which visa would be best for you - this is not always simple as not only are there several options but they tend to change the rules every few months! Have you tried doing one of those online self assessments? I'm sure others on here will be able to give you some advice too as everyone here is extremely friendly and helpful.

Hiya and firstly welcome to poms in Oz ,you will get lots of advice on here to help you along the way,it is personal choice as to using an agent or not ,it is not a requirement ,we used Visa Bureau, last year ,who where excellent ,many people on here did it by themselves.Im not an expert by any means but i think a family connection has to be a closer member of family for you to qualify,by far the best visa is a 136 skilled independant ,this gives you freedom in all areas when you arrive. You are required to be specialised in a field on the occupation wanted list, this is availble on the Dimia website (cant find link,,somebody help !!) it is on a points system and you can try on-line to see how you 'add up' before applying. The infomation they require to recognise your job has to be in great detail ,involving certain key words, all the info you need is on the website, good luck with your reasearch and gather as much info as you can

thanks to all so far. One thing though, very important to me.

Do we get the application forms and fill them in, or concentrate on getting the job part all done first? That is what i am most confused about

regards

Hi Matt & Kathryn

You have to get your skills assessed first as on the appilication form you have to put a number which you will be given when you pass the skills bit.

We're going on a 138 sponsored but you still have to have a skill/trade on the list as being sponsored just gives you extra points(15 I think) to make the 120 required.

I could have some of this wrong but this is how i think its done (we're using an agent).

Good Luck

Hi Matt and Kathryn

Sam is right, you cant apply for your skilled visa without the right skills assessment,

I suggest you go on the immi website (link above) and look on the search for the form 1121i which is a list of the occupations in demand,

You need to have an occupation or trade on that list to be able to apply for the 136 skilled immigrant. Just be aware that some terms we use in uk are not the same in Aus (Engineer in UK is a Mechanic in Aus, Engineers need degrees over there).

If you find a skill/trade that fits yours you will then need to make sure that you have the relevant points to apply, and that you must be under the age of 45.

If everything is ok and you can fullfill this criteria you need to have a look for the relevant skills assessment agency, and find out their requirements,

once you can fullfill all of these, then start applying.

We are doing ours ourself and have completed all the visa application ready for when our skills assessment comes back.

Good luck

Hi Matt and Kathryn

If you do not have a close enough relative in Australia then you will struggle to qualify for a skilled visa and your only option may be to get sponsired by an Australian Employer ro look at the study option that could lead to permanent residence.

You need to get an initial assessment to see if you have any potential for these skilled visas and take it from there.

Without a close enough relative, it will be hard, like I said, but to start, you need to look at the list of occupations on the SOL, there are 40, 50 and 60 point occupations and you will need to be recognised in 60 point occupation to get near the pass-mark. Without a formal qualification equivalent to an Australian Certificate IV or higher, you will struggle to get recognised in a 40 point occupation.

Regards
