hi gill,

We are unsure what the MODL is? Is this the ist of required jobs? If so then we think that my hubbys job gains us 60 points (hopefully). We have filled in online forms for a 136 skilled visa and have enough points on them. Will have a look at the sites you listed. Finding this all very confusing at the moment and dont know where to start. Can you point us in the right direction from here??

Thanks for your help

Hi Lisa

I am not in any sense knowledhgeable about these visas, and I particularly cannot make head or tail of the points test.

In your other thread, you have said that Hubby is an instrument technician in the oil, gas & chemical industry (fo that the Agents and more more knowlegeable members than me can start to help you to make sense of all this.)

The skills list is here:

http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/a-z.htm

The MODL is here:

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/skilled-occupations/occupations-in-demand.htm

The ideal visa is the skilled independent 136 visa. To be eligible for it, you ahve to score 120 points minimum, I believe, but lots of people manage that even though their skills are not on the MODL. It is only that the skilled 136 visa is processed faster if the skill is on the MODL.

Really, you need to plough your way through the DIAC website, but I warn you that it is head-banging stuff, that website! I am sceptical of on-line assessments, especially when the people doing them are very new to the game and don't really understand where the questions are coming from.

Start by reading Booklet 6, I suggest, which you can download from this link:

http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/booklets/booklets.htm

Then you need to start with this bit of the website:

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/index.htm

Welshtone (Tony) is a Registered Migration Agent who does a lot to help Poms in Oz members. He may be around later this evening and if so, I am sure he will reply to you.

I think I've probably given you enough brain-ache for one evening with all the above links!

Cheers

Gill

Hi gill,

Thanks for the links. We have found out that on the MODL list there is

General Electronic Instrument-Tradesperson. Is there anyway that this title could be explained to us as my hubby is unsure if there is a difference between that and just a General Instrument Technician? I appreciate that you might not be the personthat would know however woul you be able to put us in touch with someone who does. Would Welshtone (Tony) be someone who could enlighten us on the subject? how can we get in contact with him

Thanks

Hi Lisa,

Each job on the MODL list has an ASCO number - using this number you can find out what the description actually covers. I have found the one you are talking about and copied the details below. It's important to find the one most relevant to your husbands job as if you are applying for a TRA you will be assessed against these details. Hope this helps!

Lou

Hi Lisa

Peter (ptlabs) is also a Registered Migration Agent who helps out with this site and others. It is very kind of him to ahve responded to you, because none of the Agents get paid for replying to queries posted on the forums. (Thanks Peter.)

I've been looking through your other posts and it seems that this thread is relevant:

http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19519&highlight=Instrument+Technician

I gather that Hubby is not fully-qualified yet? How old is he, please? I think one needs the qualification and a certain amount of experience, but I'm nore sure how much experience. Also, for the skilled 136 the main applicant must be under 45 at the time when the application is submitted, I believe.

Several migration agents are willing to chat to you on the phone for 15 or so minutes without charging you anything, just to help you to get started with working out what might be possible and give you some general advice about what is involved.

For you, this might be a good way to start because Hubby is not fully-qualified and time-served, it seems. On the forums, the Agents can give general advice but they cannot tailor it to your particular needs to any extent because nobody has the time to post 50 questions and you wouldnn't have the time to answer them either. I think that for you, a voice-chat to start with would be the best bet.

Hope this helps a bit.

Cheers

Gill

Hi Peter

I am Welsh, born and bred in Swansea, which is a big city that encompasses small towns like Llanelli - that's for Dan's benefit - see if he takes the bait.

My wife is Irish/Australian, my kids are Australian/Irish/Welsh - been living in Ireland the last 6 years after 16 years in Australia after 4 years in London after 19 years in Wales. How old am I ? Answers on a postcard ........

Hi Lisa

I am a visa expert, or I like to think I am - a matter of opinion I suppose. I do not pretend to be a Trades Expert. The Australia trade you are mentioning is not as clearly defined or necessarily easily matched against an equivalent trade in the UK. Aded to this the "anomaly" that a trade is at the academic level of a certificate Level III and scores 60 points, the technician is at the higher academic level of a Certificate IV or diploma, but only scores 40 points.

Thus a fatal error could be made if the classification comes back as a technician for 40 points. so I would recommend getting specialist trade advice from Glenn Newton whi is an ex-director of the TRA.

Regards
