Guest Squem Posted April 12, 2009 Hi All, As some of you may already know our visa got granted a few weeks back and thankfully I was included on my dad's visa - yippee! :jiggy: Originally we didn't think I would get accepted on my dad's visa so this was a massive shock! As i didn't think it would happen my back up plan was to go over to australia on a student visa so only really looked at info for an international student - however now I don't need to do that so i'm starting to look at going to university as a domestic student! This is where i'm getting a bit stuck.... we are going on a 176 visa so we are classed as permanent residents but are not citizens until our 2 years have passed... so I'm unsure as to what loans i can get. I did a search on this forum but didn't find very much hence the post! My main queries are: - Can I apply for a student loan in Australia as a Permanent resident or do I need to be there for 2 years before I can apply? - Does anyone know what the rough costs are for a domestic student? As I've been trying to figure it out on the Canberra University page and I have no idea what they are going on about .. for example EFTSL - what is this!? How much does a unit cost? Domestic Undergraduate/Postgraduate Student with a Commonwealth Supported Place : Student and Academic Services : University of Canberra Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all! Emma You will have to pay upfront for your course, no loans or deferrment of fees until you are a citizen - 4 years I'm afraid. Fees will vary anywhere between about $5k and $10k pa all depending on what course you want to take. Arts are cheapest and Law, Medicine etc are most expensive. Domestic Undergraduate/Postgraduate Student with a Commonwealth Supported Place : Student and Academic Services : University of Canberra I have a feeling that as a permanent resident you dont get the discount for paying up front either. Guest LianneJ Posted April 13, 2009 Hiya Squem!! Can I ask you how you were excepted on your dad's visa? I can remember talking to you a while back regarding uni etc! We were in similar positions:- working full-time & might have to go over on a student visa. Did you have to leave your job so that you could get accepted on you dad'd visa? Hope I dont sound silly asking this hee hee!! Any help would be really appreciated! Lianne xx:confused:
Guest Squem Posted April 13, 2009 Hi Lianne, To be honest I cannot give you an answer!! I have no idea how I was accepted! My dad must have put a bluming good case forward - so it's all down to him!! It could be down the fact i'm on a low wage or because of the current market I can't get a mortgage so will have no where to live when my parents go! Sorry I can't give you a more specific answer! We were very shocked to be honest! Emma x

Guest LianneJ Posted April 13, 2009 Thanks Emma! Its excellent that you have been accepted on your dads visa....so much less hassle for you I would imagine! I am going to get my dad to look into this with our agent to see if there is any way possible I can go on on my family visa. I would say I make an average salary...and also cannot afford to move out (not that I want too, its so much better & cheaper living at home lol). Thanks again for your help! Good Luck! Quoll 6,357 Posted April 13, 2009 Hi Quoll, Thanks for your reply! Damn 4 years! Ha - no idea where I got 2 years from! I will have a look at the link :cute: Thanks again! Emma You used to be able to get citizenship after 2 years residence but they changed it last year. Be aware also that an honours degree will take you 4 years rather than the 3 it will take in UK. Kids get their first degree in 3 years but the hons is a thesis/course work fourth year.

samozsoon 27 Posted April 18, 2009 Hi Emma Both my two kids have started Uni this yr. My son has a Commonwealth Assisted Place but is living away from home so more expense there and my daughter is at a private Uni in Sydney but is still at home. As Quoll has already said they cant get student loans/fee help until they are citizens and we dont get the 20% discount for paying up-front either. Fees are paid beginning of the term (4 a yr). My son however is eligible for a NAB student loan (daughter isnt as shes only 17) NAB - Enjoy all student life has to offer he can use this loan for almost anything and is looking at getting one for a new (not brand new lol) car as we cant afford to help him buy one because we have two lots of fees to pay! This loan does incure interest from the date you recieve the funds though but repayments dont start until his course has finished. Anything else you would like to know please ask. Quoll 6,357 Posted April 18, 2009 Thanks Quoll! Have you ever visited Canberra University!? If so what's it like? That's the Uni i'm hoping to go to! Thanks Emma It was one of the universities which was upgraded from a CAE (College of Advanced Education) and it doesnt have the cachet of the ANU (Australia's best uni according to some rankings but I think Sydney and Melbourne would quibble about that!) - are you sure you wouldnt prefer ANU? So, the UC courses tend to be more, hmm, what's the word, vocationally oriented rather than academic if you see what I mean. So UC does teaching, lots of diplomas for postgrads etc, more applied studies in general. I did my masters there and quite frankly it was tinpot at the time compared with the University of London but I did have high standards. I have friends who have studied more recently and have suggested that it has become a tad more rigorous than it used to be and that is no bad thing. Very high population of asian international students but you get that at any Aus university these days. That has the potential to be a disadvantage if the uni bases a lot of its assessment on group work as you could find yourself tied to a group where fewer than half of the students actually have a good grasp of English. It's OK but it wouldnt be my first choice if I had a choice about where to go and what to study.

Sam Hi Sam, Thanks for this! The NAB is very interesting as it looks like i'm eligible for it which is a great help as I was worried I'd have to start paying back any loans I get straight away! Thanks again! :cute: Emma

I know exactly what you mean by UC being more vocational.. the way I look at it is... ANU = Leeds University (UK) and UC = Leeds Met (UK) and unfortuntely the only uni that offers my course is UC!! As the course I want to do is definately a vocational course! I highly doubt I would manage in ANU lol! I want to study Event management which in Oz is classed as Tourism Management and UC offers it! Whereas ANU doesnt... and to be honest after looking through their courses there are none that really shout out to me! If I had a choice I'd love to study in Sydney or Brisbane but because i can't get any student loans or help I won't be able to afford it so need to stay living with my parents to keep the costs down! And that's where we have been sponsored! Thanks again for your help! I always love hearing other peoples opinions because the websites for any uni always shout about how good they are! :twitcy: Emma
