hi All, Are there appartments or flats in canberra?

What would be approx. Weekly cost to rent a 2 bedroom apartment?

We're constantly told there is a huge surfiet of 1/2 bedroom apartments at the moment, developers have been building them like crazy to cash in on recent 'growth' (most of which seems to have been in Western Australia) but the new Kingston developments contain hundreds of them - sadly many are small, costly and empty.

Unfortunately there was a big demand for 1/2 beddies in the social housing arena - cant see them on the Kingston foreshore! Did the big build near the Rex ever get done? It'd be interesting to see how all the money poured into Homelessness a few yrs ago is reflected in the public housing domain

There's huge availability right now, a renters market for both houses and apartments.

A couple of friends have just given up a $550 pw 2 bedroom in Kingston to move into a brand new 2 bed at $430 pw, they were the only people at the viewing and made an offer which they stuck to. Their original landlord wouldn't fix draughty doors leading to huge heating bills, so they walked.

Another couple have got one right in the middle of Manuka for $475pw, it was rented at $600pw 18 months ago.

House next door to me has been empty for 4 months, started at $480 and is now at $420 with no interest, so the absentee landlord has finally been forced to spend some money on tidying the place up. The real estate girl called him up and said there was no chance of it renting in the current market unless he showed a bit of concern, so they've had glaziers in, landscapers, painters, carpet fitters, cleaned all the rubbish out the garden. It looks an awful lot better already.

The good thing about this is that a lot of the rental stock in Canberra is old and disgusting, owners don't care about carbon tax, fuel efficiency or high power bills because they don't pay those bills anyway. I remember somebody on here saying they were told they wouldn't be able to keep a pet and replying that the house wasn't even fit for a dog anyway.

Some landlords have been able to do nothing and still have people fighting over rentals, so why invest in quality? It's good to see these places spruced up a bit, but they're way behind the decent properties where owners have kept them well-maintained.
