TRA query - AQF and general advice

Recommended Posts

Guest louisbouton

I wonder whether anyone would be able to provide some initial advice?

Myself and my wife would like to migrate permanently to Australia with our

9 month old baby.

Computer Support Technician is on the SOL. However, for the last two and

a half years I have been undertaking a lot more than just support. I

wondered whether my skills would qualify under the (NEC) category. (I

think I would need 8 years experience so I don't think this would be an

option for us).

However, I understand that for either category my skills would have to be

assessed and therefore I need qualifications. I am about to commence an

NVQ3 in IT. I understand that under Computer Support Technician, TRA

would assess my skills. However, I understand that the NVQ qualification

is not recognised in Australia - the equivalent being AQF III and TRA do

not accept NVQs. How can I go about finding an RTO in England to help me?

Any advise would be appreciated. I have little other qualifications. I

do have ITIL and also am about to undertake an MCP. I wonder whether

these are classed as trade certificates? I am very experienced already,

working in the IT industry for over 10 years.

I am desperate for some advice in the best way into Australia. If it

means going under a tempory visa to begin with then that is fine as long

as I have a good chance of getting a permanent visa after. Also my wife

would need to be able to work part time under my visa. I think I have read

that TRA need a 3 year apprenticeship. However, this would be a backward

step for me. I am already highly experienced.

Also, I wasn't sure whether if I can obtain a sponser and I can get a

tempory work visa, I can then also study towards an AQF whilst working so

that after I would be able to gain a permanent visa? Do you think this is

a viable option?

I hope someone can help as we need to know which way to go as it all seems so

confusing.

We provide AQF III assessments for a number of trades, however Computer Support Technician is not one of them. We do have a number of trades in the pipe line, however again these are more mainstream occupations, like cooks, metal trades etc.

My advice would be to wait for Gill to come along and see what she makes of your situation. After that I would go see a good migration agent and get their opinion too.

As far as I know however, I dont think there are any UK based RTO's or RTO affiliates who can help you.

Sorry.

Thanks for your reply Darren, i think we have realised we will have to speak to a migration expert as there is a lot of confusing and conflicting information out there!

Hi Louis

If you are to avoid wasting money you need a very structured, methodical approach towards investigating the migration process. Hold it with your plans for the NVQ3 unless you are sure that it would actually further your plans towards migration - which it might or might not do.

Computing Support Technician is here:

Computing Support Technician 3294-11 - Australian Skills Recognition Information

The pre-migration skills assessment is done by Trades Recognition Australia:

workplace.gov.au - 1 Skills assessment for people intending to migrate to Australia

TRA look to see whether the evidence produced by the applicant matches the requirements of TRA's Uniform Assessment Criteria:

http://www.workplace.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/FA0FD1E1-8B74-4C11-AFBB-2C159890FF80/0/UniformAssessmentCriteriaSeptember2007.pdf

There is a useful Table at Section 8 of the document above. The applicant has to convince TRA that his training, work experience and formal qualifications comply fully with the requirements for TRA's skill pathways A, B, C or E. You either do comply with one or more of them or you don't. TRA do not understand garbled descriptions, either. You have to make everything crystal clear to them in great detail so as to lead them to agree that you comply with whichever skill pathway you think applies to your situation.

You say you would prefer to nominate Computing Professional nec if you can:

Computing Professionals not elsewhere classified 2231-79 - Australian Skills Recognition Information

In this case the skills assessment authority is the ACS:

ACS (Australian Computer Society) - ICT Professionals Shaping our Future

I know absolutely nothing about the IT industry so I stay right away from queries about it whever they crop up on here. The person who could tell you whether or not you would have any chance of a successful ACS application is Pete Chiam aka ptlabs:

Ptlabs Consulting

Your situation sounds too complex for you to have any hope of resolving it accurately and reliably via an internet forum.

Have you considered which visa you might apply for?

Department of Immigration & Citizenship

Information Booklets - Applications & Forms - Visas & Immigration

At the moment the name of the game with GSM visas is State Sponsorship because most people want fast tracking of their visa applications. The link to the various State Websites is here:

State & Territory Migration Sites - australia.gov.au

2231-79 crops up on several of the State 176 and 575 Lists but since I haven't a clue what the various specialties are I am not prepared to suggest anything.

Best wishes

Gill

Hi Louis,

Did you ever have any joy with TRA for Computer Support Tech? I am looking at the same process but applying for the regional sponsored route as I have a relative in Adelaide who is willing to do it and just looking for as much info as possible before starting applications etc.

Cisco Certified Network AssociateCisco Certified Network Associate Voice

At the moment I am working in a Telecommunication industry as Customer Service Support mainly in wireless (Wireless support) in the Middle East. I have total experience of 18 years. I would my qualifications to be assessed by the TRA since I was not able to finish a Bachelor Degree. But when I try to look for RTO for ICT Support Nec, I could not find any. Can you please guide me how to apply for assessment in TRA? Thank you and your help is much appreciated.

May I suggest that you consult a registered migration agent with Philippine experience?
