Hi All

I qualified as an RMN last July and I am just finishing my teaching PGCE qualification. I am due to start my first post as a public health nurse, counselling and working with people in primary care who have obesity problems.

Would this job go against me in terms of finding work in Oz as an RMN as I will not be working on MH wards or in acute care. I will be running clinics and 1:1 sessions using CBT style approaches. Also would my teaching qualification hold any weight, it is purely for post 16 education and I have been teaching Health and Social care in colleges.

Thanks in anticipation of your help

Hi - I'm having the Sydney/Melbourne debate with the wife at the moment as I'm in IT (more jobs in Sydney) and she's an RMN (loads online for Melbourne).

Am I looking in the wrong place (SEEK.com.au) as all I can see is temping/bank for RMNs in Sydney with a light scattering of full time roles, same site has roles aplenty in Melbourne? (she's got 13 years, done older adult, inpatient acute and last 2 years community drugs and alcohol so pretty broad is ok)

cheers

(fancy either or to be fair just I'd be the higher earner, even with a step down, so conscious choice over leap of faith is the order of the day)

I used google maps and found psychiatric hospitals in melbourne, most of them had a section on recruitment for overseas nurses and contacted them directly.

hope this helps

regards and good luck

Hi Brian

I was reading your post. I work for a boutique operation recruitment company, who specialise in placing foreign trained Medical Specialists and Nurses. I have a great contact in Melbourne who I am willing to send your wife's cv to. Sydney do a lot of their recruitment themselves. Seek is an excellent site for IT professionals for both Melbourne and Sydney. My husband works in IT and it helps to have people in the know. Please feel free to send both your CVs and to let me know what type of work you are after and I can advise you who to get in touch with regarding IT in Melbourne and Sydney. My husband and I immigrated from the UK, nearly 5 years ago and haven't looked back. Our original choice was between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Thanks for that - we're a fair bit off until we actually plan to move (2 year plan) so while I'd value feedback on the CVs I'm conscious that it really hacks recruiters off when you waste their time if they want to pass your details into a client and you're not ready to move. If you still think it is worthwhile let me know.

Also haven't got a clue how to attach docs (so thats me passed the skills assessment for a Senior IT Manager ;o))

cheers

Hi

So much info.........

Have I got the process right:

1. Permanent Visa

2. Need Skills Assessment (who then register you with state you want to go)

3. Apply for visa etc

1. Apply for sponsorship

2. Dont need skills assessment

3. Apply for quick visa for only so many months?

Why do people go for the visa that is not permanent (apart from them not taking as long)

Lisa:arghh:

Hi Ali

Just saw the post above about, grade 1 nurses salary going almost $699 a week. My question is, i will be coming on a graduate scheme hopefully,, but with this wage, will i manage to pay the $400 rent a week and afford a decent life style?

thanks Ali

Hi there, does anyone know if there has been a drive for MHN in Queensland? Basically I've just started my MHN diploma and am looking at emigrating to Oz in about 3 years. Is there likely to still be a demand for Mental Health Nurses in Queensland in 3 years time? Also can I get in without any experience (not bothered about salary) or is it essential that at least a years experience etc is needed? Many thanks for any advice. By the way I am a 36 year old male hoping to emigrate with wife and 2 children.

:skeptical:

I would imagine that there will always be a need for nursing, at the moment to apply for a PR visa you have to have your skills assessed by the ANMC who I think will require you to have been working at least 20 hours in the last 12 months prior to applying. At least 12 months experience when applying for jobs is a good thing (IMHO) as if posts you're applying for our competative.

Hi,

because I'm 43 years old I don't meet the criteria for a PR 175(110 points). So I want to apply for a State Sponsorship. Where am I most likely to find a job quickly? WA, SA or QLD?( I would like to go QLD but my hubbie wants WA)

I spoke with the Queensland Nurses Council and they don't recognise, have any qualification or can match it with a learning disabilities trained nurse. However, they suggest that you contact the new National Board from the 1st July. The website is www.ahpra.gov.au. If I can help you further, please email me adeleclayte@gmail.com

Hi everybody,

Did anyone apply for credentialing with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses( www.acmhn.org) Is it necessary? It is a lot of work to do! I am already registered with AHPRA.

Hi all

I'm looking at Perth or Adelaide. Any info on RMN jobs in Adelaide elderly dementia??? (Ali has already put me in the picture for perth). Looking to come out next year for a couple of weeks.(1 week in perth the other in adelaide) Hopefully have some interviews/meetings set up? What kind of visa do you most commonly apply for? and would going through an agency be a better bet? Also how much in the way of money (savings) should we aim to have if/when were accepted and move just to suvive at the start (family of 3)

Hi,

I am hoping to emigrate to Melbourne with my family after I qualify with a Bsc in Mental Health Nursing.

I know Ramsay Healthcare offer a graduate nursing programme, but do you know of any others that would accept a newly qualified nurse with no experience?

Thank you!

Hello all, I'm new to this forum and have found it very useful. I am an RMN looking to relocate to Melbourne in Oct 2011. I have a job offer with Northwestern Mental Health. I have received my elegibility letter from AHPRA and my Police Certificate. Would like to talk to other nurses making the move to Melbourne or are working with Northwestern Mental Health. Thanx!

My husband has had a job offer by his old bosses who have recently returned back to Oz and we are considering moving over to Melbourne. I am a mental health nurse in Leeds at present and a band 6 (6yrs since qualifying). Where do i start about finding out about nursing posts and how the mental health system works in oz? Can anyone direct me to reliable sites where i can gain more information about the process, time scales, how the health system differs from UK and average cost of living? HEEELP, it's all so over whelming but exciting at the same time.

Not sure if this has been asked but looking, at moving to australia at the end of this summer 2011 and would like to know who out there have jobs. I am a MH nurse and already registored in Aus, so not particular about state as i am prepared to work anywhere. Anyone out there know of any Agencies that are taking up trained nurses? or can anyone point me in the right direction.

Hello, my partner is a band 7 of 14yrs experience in the NHS (community based, older age mental health) and is struggling to find any early diagnosis / treatment dementia memory clinics in the Sydney metro area. He doesn't want to go back onto the wards. Does anyone have any info about employment opportunities? Agencies just don't seem to 'get' his specialism and keep highlighting inappropriate mental health posts (wrong client gorup) in the wrong locations!
