Poca&Dan
I can't speak for now, but I was offered a job in May time and around that time I had 2 other interviews and was offered both jobs, so there didn't appear to be any trouble in finding a job, I started looking at the beggining of the year. I can't imagine things have changed that much in the last 3 months!!? Good luck with it all! Vitalinternational and IPA were very good agencies to join I would reccommend! Poca&Dan
The above agencies that I mentioned both look in Perth. Not sure about what you can do when you are there, however if you get an interview you should ask questions. I thought it was important to ask about career development, further training/education and shift patterns! To me the shift patterns were really important. I had an interview with a hospital in Perth - I can't remember which hospital it was! However their rota was a rolling rota (4 days on 2 days off!) and I worked out I would get 1 weekend off in 6! They wouldn't budge on flexibility and I felt that this hospital was not right for me as I would be going out there with just OH who would more than likely work 9-5 mon - Fri and so we would never see each other which I imagine would place huge pressure on our relation - being in a different country and all! Had to consider whether my working conditions now are better or worse than what I already am working in? At the moment I only work mon - fri so to only have 1 weekend off in 6 would be a nightmare! If you can you should prob have a look around any hospitals, check out their facilities! If the above hospital's rota doesn't bother you I can find out which one it was for you, last I remeber they offered a very good relocation package, which I think is one of the last hospitals to offer it due to the current economic climate! Hope that helps!
Ratchet
most wards do self rostering and most are very understanding of the needs of those who have not long emigrated to work here. the last thing they would want is to spend loads of money recruiting you and then have you leave as soon as youve arrived as you didnt like the shifts/ward/job.. i can only speak for one hosp but its pretty damn big and covers the whole of the country and has just taken on loads of nurses from all over the globe. So far iver gotten all the shifts ive wanted
tcillc
If you talk about about Melbourne or Victoria in general, there is always a high demand for mental health nurses. Hospitals like Melbourne Health's North West Mental Health are always looking for nurses and they do assist the applicants with sponsorship. Another option is a private group called Healthscope. They have advertised for UK nurses and want all specialisations. Here is the link: View Advert Cheers!

tcillc
Do you work for them (healthscope)? No I don't!! One of my friend works as nurse with a nursing agency in Melbourne and often works in different Healthscope hospitals. According to her, Healthscope has sponsored a lot of overseas nurses in recent months.

Most of the staff are from the uk/america/brazil/africa and they support PR quite quickly apparently
Guest Pysira
I've recently been informed that the goverment has 'shut the door' to international nurses seeking work in WA and doesn't intend to recruit outwith Australia for the foreseeable future......can anyone confirm if this is correct? ali
I haven't heard this directly, however, health services are still being asked to look at financial cuts and savings and over xmas a lot of services will be operating on reduced staffing. Overseas recruitment can cost a considerable amount of money with relocation expenses etc., so in some ways it makes sense that this is an area whereby they can save some money. However, I do believe that this will be temporary. Just thought - that this may be state sponsorship, there may still be a chance that you can approach hospitals directly and the service may sponsor you, or private hosptials
Guest Pysira
thanks for the reply...it was a well known agency that told me this, i did ask if it was specific to their company but they've said it was across the board and closed to everyone. i also approached Forensicare in Melbourne (different state, I know) but they also said they are not employing directly from the UK. They would consider UK staff only when they were in the country where face to face interviews could be conducted....just putting this here for anyone who may be interested x
ali
I don't know about agencies, but I know that in the current climate the hospital I work for will only use agency as a last resort due to the expence. Instead, they're offering temporary 3 month contracts to people. Approach some hospitals directly rather than an agency and enquire about sponsorship. Guest Pam D
Hi I wondered if I could ask what people's experience of mental health nursing is in Queensland? I am a RMN with over twenty years experience and currently work as a Senior Practitioner within CAMHS. We are hoping to come over October time and I am looking to work within CAMHS if possible within the Brisbane area(Have an interview in a few weeks). I have my spouse visa and am ringing tonight to pay for my QNC registratration, then just need to find a job, which is not as easy as I thought it would be. I am struggling to even get interviews and wonder if it is something I am doing wrong, or maybe my age is against me(43) although have had a lovely email from the Nursing Director for the Gold Coast MH Services who would be happy to meet me when we go over for our reccie. I have just been reading some really negative experiences on another forum(sorry, was googling!!) which to be honest is really making me nervous. I don't expect it to be like the UK, it is another country after all but some of the posters were talking about dangerous conditions, staff bullying and worst of all, really dire patient care(naked in seclusion was one example!!!) I know people have their own experiences and I have worked in some undesirable places throughout my career and although I ususally make my own opinion on things, this is starting to make me wonder if we are making the right decision(especially as I am the main wage earner so don't have many options) Do I sound like I am having a moment of panic? 68 sleeps til our reccie visit so am hoping I may have something sorted by then. Any help or advice would be really appreciated. Thanks Pam xxx
Guest PommieLady
Hi Pam What you say about the work conditions for mental health unfortunately isn't far from the truth. Community work is definitely better than ward although not as well paid. However there are great educational opportunities and it is easy to get none health work. I work as a mental health clinical nurse specialist for a GP, working 35hrs a week for 90k a year and its a dream job. You actually get to do some real mental health nursing, its fab. I primarily utilise cognitive and behavioural techniques with excellent sucess (as indicated by the evidence). Education wise, I have just finished my masters which I had a full scholarship (for the bits I did in Australia). Plus I'm about to start a masters in mental health sciences (cognitive and behavioural therapies) which I have a full scholarship for and have just declined a full scholarship for the practitioner element of a masters for which I also had a place. I've recently obtained a new job in Queensland and we are hoping to move there in a few months if/when we sell the house. My new employers are paying for us to go and visit next week :jiggy: For my current job, and new job you need to be credentialed through the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses. This role is under the Mental Health Nurse Initiative and cover under 16's. Potentially something that might meet your needs? Let me know if you want any further information. All the best :wubclub:
Guest Pam D
Hi Thank you so much for that. I have been looking at the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses and the credentialling and wondered is this something that would benefit me in terms of obtaining a position? and if so,should I start the application now I have my reg with QNC or wait until I am actually in Australia? It would be really great to get to know some other mental health nurses as the more research I am doing, the more :twitcy:I become. However, I am fully determined to come to Australia, but will have to get my head around the fact that I may not be able to use the skills I have worked so hard to acquire(but I will always have them won't I so I haven't lost anything!) Thanks again Pam
Guest lucadoyle
Hello, I am a 36 year old male and would like some advice. I am looking at retraining as a mental health nurse and am looking at emigrating to Australia at the end of it. Does anyone know what UK qualification would be accepted by Australia? Diploma or degree etc? Also does anyone realisticly know if there will be any jobs for a newly qualified MHN in Queensland as it is on the critical skills list? I am not so bothered by pay etc at this stage as I would just need my foot in the door. Many thanks for any advice given.

Hi I am sorry I can't really help as I qualified in 1985 when it wasn't either a degree or diploma and am not using my nursing qulaification for my visa as my husband has Australian citizenship by descent(so will be going on a spouse visa) I do think (am not 100% though!) you need to have a year post qualification experience before you can apply for your visa, and from what I have seen there does seem to be quite a few posts advertised(certainly within Queensland where I will be going), although it depends on where you'd like to go.It may be worth you looking at the relevant state's nursing info(I got loads of information from Queensland Health) Mental Health: Queensland Health: WorkForUs. I hope someone can answer your queries and wish you lots of luck for the future. Pam
Guest nevz1
hi guys, iv got a couple of questions would be great if someone could help me out! Basically im in my final year of RMN training, i qualify in august and im dying to get to the queensland area of aus! Firstly i understand that aus have registered nurses which is a three year course and enrolled nurses which is two years, im doing the diploma which is three years in the UK so im wondering what that would transfer to in australia? Also iv heard that some agencies are taking on newly qualified nurses to do their preceptorship with them rather than having to do it and gain experience in the uk first, does anyone know if this is the case? because i would love that:) anyway id really appreciate any help or comments, thankyou x
