NURSES - Moving to Australia

I'd check with aphra but I'm sure even degree nurses need a couple years experience even the post grads here have to do one year to register with aphra, from my own experience of nursing here I'm trying to just give an accurate picture

of how it is there are minimal perm contracts anywhere just giving my honest experience from

living here and word of mouth, I agree there should be unity between Anmac and aphra they need to give clarity and consistency to applicants.

UOTE=geordiegirl68;1936556349]Hi Laura,

I have read the DOH's report, as I clutch at my straw, it does say in some areas employment for graduate nurses is a problem, this is even explained to us at expos, however, what is made clear to us is that 'experienced' specialised nurses are very much in demand, in order to make the workforce more robust. To act as mentors etc, and probably why ANMAC require post reg experience when they assess you. However, if AHPRA have their way, you will have lots of newly qualified UK degree nurses, competing for jobs, as they don't require any experience as part of their assessment, so you tell me what you'd rather have??? And as nurses remain on SOL list, for each state, your argument really doesn't hold up!

I just don't understand it, that is based in the hospital I work at there's been not enough vacancies for the post grads to get their year experience so they can register so it's been in the media a lot I think aswell Australia is becoming the most casualised workforce in the world and not only in nursing but many companies will offer casual

Contracts instead of permanent contracts, just seems to be the way out here.

Hey everyone, ok update from me. The Rockingham Telegraph are doing a story on my wife on Thursday regarding our family being given PR and refused registration to work on arrival. We are going to milk this for all we can so if there is anyone else in Perth or Rockingham in the same situation please PM so we can include you. We are going to put in about the fact we are claiming $2200 a month In news start job seekers allowance, rent allowance and child tax benefit. All of which we wouldn't be if we as been treated properly on arrival and allowed to work. After forking out £12000 to be here We are going to claim whatever we can. This will wind the readers up big time and the local MP and immigration will also be asked to comment. I would be furious if we were in the UK and were importing people who are forced onto benefits. So let's see if we can embarrass AHPRA into action. I will post a link to the story when it comes out and urge anyone else already in Australia to contact their local paper.

We'll be in Perth in November, but suppose that wouldn't count, but have now spent £11K without flights, have employers wanting to employ me, but even they are unaware of AHPRA situation. Employers more than happy to employ experienced UK DipHE nurses, situation is mad! Well done for your hard work, look forward to the article.

And....... still no answer on Twitter!

Yes we are PR and your right there are certain benefits that you cant claim for two years but not relevant in out position. I just double checked my Centetlink account and We are both currently recieving New start, $480 each a fortnight, family tax benefit $440 a fortnight and rent allowance $148 a fortnight. So actually I was off the mark earlier it's actually $1548 a fortnight. They even backdated it to the day we arrived and after two months gave me a large lump sum. If you had told me a year ago that I would have to queue up outside the job Center which I did for two hours I really wouldn't have believed you. I'm not proud of it but I am so angry that after all the years of training and money we have spend AHPRA have forced us into this position.

I feel for you guys but the whole reason aphra have done this is due to the job situation out here for nurses. There aren't even enough jobs for the Aussie nurses newly qualified and existing nurses so adding migrant nurses to the mix would just exacerbate the problem. There are Aussie nurses out here who are equivalent of diploma whom are registered also that's life, boards can change standards as they wish that's called progression same as in uk with project 2000 you could not wipe out all nurses who were registered under the old system. I think rather than wasting time and clutching at straws why not do the top up to degree or bridging program if you are really desperate to go to

oz?

I'm all for progress Laura George, I just spent the last 18 months training to be a midwife to gain a BSC Hons, in order to compliment the Diploma I have held for the last 14 years, in addition to the BSC HONS health visiting degree I also have held for the last ten years. I did this in order to meet the Australian requirements to register as a family child health nurse. It would now seem that my RGN qualification is worthless in Ahpras opinion, therefore probably unable to ever gain registration as intended. 14 years as a nurse with experience and qualifications in trauma care, community nursing, health visiting, sexual health/HIV counsellor, and midwifery............Bridging program? I don't think so!!!

Hi Colette...just seen your post. I'm also a specialist sexual health/HIV nurse. Where did u work before u did midwifery? With your 2 degrees do you really think you won't get registered? I did diploma in 1999 and have topped up to degree currently awaiting a decision from ahpra. Its a joke I know but I'm staying hopeful! Which part of Aus are u hoping to go to? :)

Hiya Kelly, I worked in Lancs. I think the problem will be that my nursing degree isn't RGN itself its health visiting, and whilst my midwifery degree would be accepted I am unlikely to get a job as a newly qualified midwife, as Australian newly qualified midwives are struggling to get employment. Just like nursing they want experience. I would need stay in the UK and gain about 2 years midwifery experience. I'm not parting with anymore money until someone on here tells me that they managed to get registration with a health visiting degree! I was hoping to go to Perth until they put nursing on schedule 2, now you need ajob offer for 12 months, so we were heading to Melbourne

Hi there!

Collette all of this has got me worried too, like yourself I am a dip he Nurse with district nursing BSC hons, currently working in sexual health and now completing my masters. I know there has been much debate over the diploma registration but I am hoping my additional quals will see me through the registration process although I'm starting to doubt that. We are looking at settling in either Adelaide or Brisbane.

I'm in the Manchester area- so probably know a few people mutually! We're all desperately hoping for some positive news on registrations...especially those of us who have spent £10k already so I don't blame you for sitting it out to see what happens! :banghead:

I would like to think so but I'm thinking that they may only allow the RGN top up degree and as they don't seem to understand UK qualifications. I'm not sure that they will understand what our degree is!! I have emailed AHPRA to see if it is an acceptable qualification to them......

This is all madness! We are being refused on only one thing, as has been mentioned! I counted up, I have asked AHPRA 6 times now on twitter why our UK diploma is AQF6, not AQF7, we are being compared to an 18 month Oz course! AHPRA are still yet to answer this question, because they can't. The only reason for refusal is 'criterion 4' which relates to the AQF framework. Please all with any doubts, read the AQF if you haven't, and add your voice to twitter, with this, or all the other questions your asking, the more we raise issues there, the better!

Long time lurker so thought I'd post!

Finally after 7 months I have AHPRA registration eligibility! Sent docs off in November 2013 so hopefully they're coming through now.

Also I have a top up degree and didn't have much hassle as all AHPRA required was proof for criteria 2, 3 and 8.

Very frustrating process.

Good luck guys

Just been reading some threads on another forum from nurses within the EU who are also having their applications refused based on the same argument, this has been going on since last year. Looks as though it was only a matter of time before UK trained nurses got a turn. I think the message from Ahpra is very clear, they do not want anymore overseas nurses, and the Diploma argument is a perfect way to block a large proportion of these.

That's some good news at last! Do you have ANMAC assessment too? Well done, all the best in Oz.
