How are people still getting in on work visas ? I think any of you planning on coming here should hurry it up if that is what you want because surely this will all change soon as things get progressively worse in employment here. That's why they sat that CSL list .. To ensure that most immigrants who are relocating there are not a burden on the economy and will find a job easily , unlike those who are not on the MODL and CSL list who will compete with others already loosing there jobs now in the recession ... Guest proud2beaussie Posted February 12, 2009 Share Posted February 12, 2009 What it comes down to basically is that although unemployment can be on the increase you can still have skill shortages and that is what the migration program is meant to address,when you have an oversupply of labour in one area and you don't have the resources to retrain people quickly enough then you need to fill the gaps in other ways,and migration is one way to do it. It may,at first glance appear crazy to be issuing visas in times of recession,but things are not always as the seem at the outset.yes the unemployment rate is rising,but there are still jobs to be had for people with the right skills. Specialist jobs like that are surely going to be in demand and I believe that there is still a shortage of health care professionals, but a skills shortage for people in IT, building etc, can't see it now. Disagree, how can bus drivers and public transport workers be safe when so many people are out of work. I would imagine a lot of these people would be willing to train for these jobs rather than being unemployed. Why would a visa be granted for those sort of jobs ???? I was commenting in respect of my OH who is a bus driver. His job is safe here. I was talking in respect of those already doing the job, not coming over on a visa to do it. Hi lovediving, I totally agree with you about the recession here and the job losses.... I think too many people want to stick their heads in the sands and think that it is not going to affect Australia. If you have not experienced a job loss here, then it is very easy to be compliant and think that the world is great. Here in WA we are experiencing job losses due to the mining industry sheding jobs left right and centre... it is having a domino effect on other industries... My new job on monday is with a company that manufacturers roof trusses for new housing and commercial construction.... in September they had over 78 employees working in the factory, they are now down to 58, and for every person that leaves they are not replacing them at the moment. I think it is far too easy for people to think that times will not be bad here.... yes certain fields like healthcare and specialist fields will not be as affected by the recession, however, construction is starting to take a hit here and I am sure that other areas will be affected as well. I still think Australia is a great country... and will fare better than the UK, however, it bugs me when people jump on people who post something negative on here... it is like being back in kindie all over again. The recession is worldwide, and anyone who thinks otherwise, is basically sticking their head in the sand. I for one knows what it is like to be laid off here... was laid off just before xmas... first time ever in my worklife.... it has taken over 7 weeks of looking for work and that was a full time job in itself... I was sending out numerous resumes on a daily basis... and not hearing anything back about jobs.... my new job I was lucky to get, and I still had to take a decrease in pay to get it. So I think if you get your visa... well done and try and get a job here before you come... it will make life alot easier for you. However, certain skilled positions will still be in demand like doctors and accountants (i hope) as i dont see anyone retraining for 7 yrs unlesss they had no other choice.
