Guest LX_RV86 Posted January 31, 2009 Share Posted January 31, 2009 Hi this is going to sound pretty silly, but my agent confirmed that I need to have been registered as a teacher for 12 months before I can apply for my TA assessment, which I already knew from this forum. However, I have just been going through my paper work and my QTS certificate is dated 1st August 2008. Does this mean I can apply from then or do I have to wait until September? I need a reference from my head, I am leaving my current school in April so should I get my reference now or get one from the head at my new school? I am still an NQT and will be until July/August. Other thing... in the UK it's soon to become a requirement for teachers to have a Masters Level qualification. Is this also the case in Australia? I'm about 1/2 way through my MA and will be 2/3 through when I apply for my skills assessment, how would I put this on the application if I don't yet have the full award? Lastly, this is for my brother as well, do we need our GCSE and A Level certificates? Arghhhhh my heads all over the place! :arghh: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
jonnosuzie Posted January 31, 2009 Share Posted January 31, 2009 Hi Alexandra, When I sent my assessment off I had to send my quals, plus my QTS certs and my GTC registration certificate. So as long as you have these there is no reason why you can send it off sooner? I dont who has told you that teachers will be requiring a master before teaching? If this is the case then no one will ever go into teaching? There has been nothing stated by the GTC on this? Where did you hear this? For those going the GTP route they will struggle also. I only did my PGCE last year (secondary ICT but I'm re-training in Special Needs so I'm finishing my MA anyway) we were told that by 2018 teachers would struggle to find a job if they did not have an MA! Our university offered the postgrad route (which I did) which carried 1/3 of a MA, a load of the trainees were worried sick about this and still are! It doesn't look like there are any intentions in increasing UK pay of teachers at all! What age do you teach? How have you found the process? Quoll Posted January 31, 2009 Share Posted January 31, 2009 Wouldnt be surprised if that is the way Australia will go as well - they already have the 4 year training requirement (which I believe UK doesnt yet??). You are wise to be doing a special ed unit, that will always stand you in good stead when you get here, especially if you have autism or challenging behaviour as a particular speciality. jonnosuzie Posted February 1, 2009 Share Posted February 1, 2009 Hi Quoll, The UK does indeed have a 4 year entry. Either a degree plus a PGCE or GTP, or a 4 year BA with QTS. I went the PGCE route and also got the masters credits - so not too worried. I doubt very much I will teach forever, I originally trained as an Electronics Engineer, so I may just go back to that. I currently teach secondary PE and ICT. I have managed to learn sign language as we have a hearing imparied unit so we get a lot of SEN types. So far the TA assessment was very simple. Just needed to get all my information together including transcripts from Uni and college and send all of these off. As far as you GCSE certs and A-levels, I lost mine a long time ago so I got a letter from my old school to say what year I graduated. They didnt state the results, but I think OZ sees the letter as a letter of graduation? (Dont take my word for it though!). Who is you main applicant? The reason I ask is I am going on a 176 family sponsored and I will then apply for my mums as last remaining family member. Just wondered as your mum is retired? Yes indeed,especially in light of the fact that when I was in London last year there were advertsiements offering Aussie teachers jobs with pay of around £800.00 a week which compared to aussie pay scales is not too bad at all. Guest LX_RV86 Posted February 1, 2009 Share Posted February 1, 2009 Hi again Quoll: thanks for that I'm doing a 2 year part time course in SEN and specialising in Autism, Dyslexia/ Dyspraxia and ADD/ADHD. Currently studying a module called "The role of the SENCO which will put me in a good place for working my way up as a SENCO! I definatly don't want to teach ICT for the next 43 years! My 2nd subjects (Business Studies, Drama and French) will probably be in less demand in Oz. Jonathan: If you already have a post grad certificate then I'm doubting you'll have much trouble. For teachers recently qualified, universities are making it very easy for us to get our full MA (with Edge Hill in Lancashire offering units for free!) although I decided to pay and go with JMU to finish mine. I'm assuming that you qualified pretty recently too? How our application works out is pretty strange! My older brother and I are going with our mum (who's 66 and retired) but we both have professions and can't go on each other's visas anyway (with us being siblings) he's an ICT professional so we're getting a visa each (175 for him and 176 for me). She can't go on a last remaining relative visa because we have 2 other brothers staying in the UK so she's comming with us on the same day on an ETA visa then applying for PR when there!
