Hairdressing thread

Recommended Posts

I have noticed other threads with jobs/careers, so i thought what about starting a hairdressing thread.

I'm sure there are plenty of hairdressers hoping to go to Oz or already there, so we can be a network of support, especially with the 'credit crunch' at the moment, and help and support each other in this stressful time.

My name is Tania and i have been an hairdresser since 1983, i have worked for myself for biggest part of these years.

I have a state sponsorship to Victoria and have applied for a 176 visa.

It would be good if there are hairdressers out in Oz to say if they work in a salon or are freelance, and what is it like working out in Oz, i'm sure any information would be highly appreciated by myself and fellow hairdressers.

Thanks Tania XX:wubclub:

Hiya, not a hairdresser but go to a salon where i always ask for one of 2 uk hairdressers. The salon employs mostly uk hairdressers and they are well appreciated. When we came here i tried many salons, ozzie hairdressers, no disrespect but now i have found a good uk hairdresser i will stick to her!

Hi there

my OH is a barber with 21 years experience. we are going to melbourne as soon as the house sells.

He has made a few enquiries already and it seems the majority of barbers are female! and paid a lot better than the UK. hopefully there is room for a very experienced male barber. we have got the visa on my profession so he is allowed to work in any area - he may even change his career when we get out there.

good luck to everyone

Bonnie

hi fellow hairdressers

this is a great idea as it is really hard to find advice you are looking for sometimes, i'm pauline and have been hairdressing for 22 years, i am just at the start in this whole process, i am using an agent and just trying to get things started. I am going for the 176 family sponsered visa, my brother is out in noosa queensland, i have 3 children and have always worked in hairdressing .

Hi Tania

Not sure what i'm going to do i think i would probably work in a shop first of all and once i got to know people then i would go freelance, what about you?

Hi Tania

I think that is the best way too, especially when you can make the same wages in one day sometimes as you can in one very long hard week in a shop and not get to see the family as much as you would like. I think freelance in australia is suited to our job, enjoying every aspect of home life and work, because it is just like socialising doing someones hair at home and you meet lots of new friends, I can't wait, I am starting to dream now, need to give myself a shake!!!! Well it sounds good anyway.

Hello

I'm a UK Hairdresser in Queensland, if you need any advice I will try to answer any questions you fellow PIO's put to me, Good Luck....

Hi I am currently studying hairdressing in the UK i've nearly finished my NVQ2 and going to do NVQ 3 and hopefully qualify next June. I want to move to Oz, what is the best way to go about it? would i need to get a sponsorship before I go out there and what sort of visa would i need to apply for? I don't have much knowledge at the moment so any advice would appreciated. Thanks Hayley

You should post this question in the migration forum as that's where the migration agents like to hang out, they are way more qualified than me to answer this, I qualified for PR visa because of my time served in the hairdressing industry of nearly 20 years (oh! that makes me feel old), since you are still studying then sponsorship will be your best route I would guess...

my friend has done her nvq 1, 2 and 3 but because she has not had so many years experience cannot even get a visa

Hi all hairdressers im going to victoria in July, I have found out that you don't need to register in this state but you do have to have a license to be freelance. I also look on career one at the jobs and they all seem to be on the west coast of victoria at the moment and not as many as 6 months ago. Good luck to you x

Hi and welcome to poms in oz, good luck with nearly finishing your NVQ 2, i would personally have a chat to an agent, i used Go-Matilda and just check out what options are open to you personally

Good luck
