Well i read this post with interest, there's some good points. I am coming over to Auz in April to live and work. I ve travelled there 5 times before spending some extended stays.

I previously lived in Southern and Northern Ireland for 10 years before moving back to the Uk in 2003 (now that was a friendly place).

Ive seen a country that had changed out of all proportion to what i remembered.

I love the Uk and am proud of being english but the place has gone to the dogs.

All the local shops are closed, killed by the supermarkets, the standard high street now consist of Betting shops, tanning salons, off licence, takeaways. All the local pubs have closed. Then you have the big sprawling americanlike mall set ups ( i wonder will these survive the crunch?)

Some of the parks on Friday evening, especially in summer are no go areas as kids are pissed and its just intimidating. The sense of community dosent seem to exist anymore. Theres one small local post office near where i live that has a gem of a couple in who are friendly and give you the time of day.

I do think that a change is on the way though. All this credit crunch stuff, debt etc, might just change things for the better. When folk realise that all the material stuff didnt make them happy. The whole country has in my opinion been diluted, dumbed down, silently oppressed!

Love being a Brit but happy to be leaving.

Mike....I live in Stratford upon Avon and just do not see the things you say you see, yes I know crap is happening in parts of the UK and I agree it is bad.........but this type of thing was also rife in the part of Australia that I lived in, crap happens in both Countries and if you think you will be leaving it when you go to Oz you must think again...I bang on about this point as people will just go and will be dissapointed when they get there and find that some places are just like the bad parts of the UK....Do your homework and steer clear of the rough crime ridden areas by asking and researching the worst areas and you will be OK.

Your right mate and thanks for the advice, there is crime all over the world and ive lived in many different areas including Auz. i can only say is what i see here in my town. I know Straford upon avon is a pretty nice place though.

The place i grew up in and spent much of my adult life around is now like the wild west with no one giving a hoot and no respect shown for anyone. I also work for the emergency services and see many different things some hard to believe. It grieves me when old folks are scared to go out of their houses, its also a shock to see the poverty in this country.I see it constantly in my job.

I am a pretty outdoor kind of person and i am going to cherish and embrace the aussie way of life.

Will keep out of the crime ridden areas thanks for that but i get the feeling i will be spending a lot of my time working in them.

I am sure you will enjoy Oz as you have the chance to pick your spot which is a bit harder in the UK due to family work etc.

Good luck.

Yeah BRO stay in the UK its great XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Actually it IS GREAT!

I live right on the edge of London next to a 180 acre Park-totlly unspoilt in the 25 years I have lived here since I "emigrated" from the heart of London-STILL one of the 2 most vibrant Cities in the World.

I have devoted much of the last year to returning to London and if you "use" London its fantastic!..The diversity of people and CHOICE is endless whether it be Restaurants/Cinema/Theatre/Sport/Casino's etc...as you would expect with 7/8 million residents. Its impossible to experience all London's charms in ONE lifetime!

If one prefers a more "traditional" way of British Life then The Home Counties are right on the doorstep.Last week we walked the 10 miles around Lewes,Sussex-this week it will be the beautiful "Seven Sisters" Hills near Beachy Head in January and its NOT that cold at all!....

I have endless fields/woods/meadows/parks within a 10-mile Radius.

Easy access by train or car back to London(half-hour to Trafalgar Square) and yet have the wondrous County of Kent(The Garden Of England) on my doorstep within 10 minutes drive the other way!

My house(3-bedroom) costs less than 190,000K...in the 25 years of living in Bexley I have witnessed ONE crazy Guy,personally and heard of ONE Burglary in my road of 200 homes--IN 25 YEARS!...

ENGLAND and BRITAIN IS STILL GREAT .....

Spring and the Bluebells/Primroses/Daffodils are just round the corner in this VERY "Green and Pleasant Land"....

p.s Out TV is still very good,in the main,as well....

Clarkson would sort it.

Jeremy? He'd make an awesome leader!! :biglaugh:

I still get intimidated by groups of "yoots" (as Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinnie would say) hanging around in street corners out here, but nowhere near as scary as back in the UK.

I was saddened to see the news this morning, that on Manly Corso yesterday, groups of drunken kids wrapped in Australian flags were yelling "Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie go back home" outside a $2 dollar shop where an asian lady works... doesn't exactly make you want to take citizenship, if that's what these young people think being "Australian" is all about... not that I'm thinking about it BTW - way too proud of being British!!

What a sad little angry man you are.

Australia is not far behind mate..

THE economy is headed for recession next year, with a 50 per cent plunge in share values and a double-digit drop in house prices.

This certainly seems to be true....since returning to school yesterday I've heard all sorts of horror stories about people being laid off work over summer...not sure where their next dollar is coming from. I had a english lady at my door this morning looking for cleaning work. She was in tears..her husband lost his building job (they've been here only 5 weeks) and they can barely afford to feed their children......scary:shocked:
