Hi there everyone,

I am originally from London, migrated from Essex in August 2003 we have our residency here in nz but have only had it for 2 years. We first came out on a work to residency visa and applied later on just wanted to know if it's best to wait until we have our citizenship here in nz before we apply :)

Hi Alan

Thanks for the quick reply, secretly hoping that we could get over sooner, but it looks like we will have to wait until citizenship

Thanks again Hayley Tabram

One thing to note is that newly arrived New Zealand citizens in Austraila do not acquire Australian permanent residence automatically. NZ citizens are granted what is called the Special Category Visa which is a indefinite temporary visa - it has the trappings of a permanent visa, but without most of the rights/privileges of one.

Just in case this is a consideration.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the added info. How long does the temporary visa last for.

Thanks

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the added info. How long does the temporary visa last for.

The SCV granted to NZ citizens upon arrival in Australia on a NZ passport is valid for the duration of the SCV holder's stay in Australia. It lapses when the holder leaves Australia, but a new SCV is granted upon re-entry to Australia, so long as the NZ citizen remains eligible for an SCV at that time.

In English, that means the SCV is practically valid so long as the holder remains in Australia.

Only thing to note is that if your health deteriorates overseas and you wish to reenter Australia, you may not be granted an SCV.

Also, if you acquire a criminal record overseas and wish to reenter Australia, you may also not be granted an SCV.

The SCV is no substitute for a permanent visa, in my humble opinion, but is a practical alternative depending on your circumstances.

Peter
