ABN ,lol, you can apply on-line its very straight forwards. You can also choose a business name and check the business register to make sure its not already taken, then simply register it. When i was starting out i found smartlicence in Brisbane a great help andthey dont charge for helping you either, well worth making an appointment to go and see them.

Outdoor furniture is what you need to be doing, told you that last week, lol, you can make me a 12 seater to be a 'show one',lol

If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place...

If you get a chance, take it, If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said it would be easy they just said it would be worth it...

Good luck with starting up on your own Eddie. OH in same boat also, he over working for someone again so thinking of starting on his own like he did in UK. (Although he does already have his ABN number).

Apparently you need a BSA licence aswell as ABN. This is so that you can advertise as a bona fide carpenter. otherwise you can only charge people $1100 max per job! im finding out more on monday, but getting licenced seems to be the forward.

Yet more obstacles in the way, I was led to belive they wanted tradesmen!!!!!!:arghh:

(thanks for help other day eddie)

Guest adamchippie

Hi, I'm a chippie and just started applying for my builders license.

You need to obtain a Certificate 4 in Building and Construction before you can get you builders license. Alternatively, if you just want a BSA Trade license, you just need to prove that you know what your doing (qualifications, references etc.)

Hope this helps??

Also, i'm being laid off this week so if anyone knows of any jobs going?? lol

Cheers

Adam (28 brisbane)

sorry to hear you are getting laid off adamchippie, does seem like there is a big drop in the amount of work around in brissie, as for the licence it seems a nightmare to obtain, i looked into it, for the bsa license you have to go to a tafe on a short course for managment, and then prove your qualifications, i have nvq`s but they are not recognised here, so i would have to go to a tafe to get my qualification recognised and transferred into the australian equivalant, i have the paper work and you have to supply references from contractors you have done work for, which is harder than you think asking your boss to give you a reference so you can go into business against them would not go down well, you can work self employed so long as you earn less than $1100 per job, this includes your materials and gst, but i think you could still make a decent living this way, and go for the bsa license at the same time, good luck, we all need it, matt.

You dont need to register a business name. You can work in your own name. As sole Trader you can use your existing File Tax Number. You must get Public Liability Insurance to to value of $5m-$10m. If you work from home you need Home Occupation License from the Local Government. The rules are different between these departments for each occupation. Similarly if you want to setup a workshop from home. If you rent you must obtain permission from the landlord. If you need to employ people look for the business.gov.au website for relevant info. These are just formalities and simple to adhere to.

If you need market research about your trade then go to our sister website. While it is mainly for WA the links to IBISworld is for Australia. Look under economy info. See Perth Business Services - Home
