We have australian friends there and my cousin and her family, also so it seems the most sensible place to try. I'm a qaulified gardener / Horticulturalist with 19 years experience, running my own business in Lincoln in the UK,is there a demand for this trade in OZ? I'm willing to retrain in any areas of the industry that are different to here.I'd be happy to work for a company or start my own business if this is possible. I'm a hard worker and not frightened to get my hands dirty. My wife works as a teaching assistant and is studying for an N.V.Q. We have three children ,all eager to come too. We enjoy socialising and think we could have a better life style down under. Look forward to talking to people on the forum, any advise would be most appreciated. There is a lot of horticulture around Melbourne and Grandiflora is not far away from here you could have a look at their web site and its a start Grandiflora - Contact The Dandenong Ranges area on the outskirts of Melbourne is where a lot of horticultural activities are carried out as the soil is very very good there and being cooler in the summer and getting more rain in the winter is ideal. Its a very nice area to live in as well. Have a google about Monbulk, Kallista, Lilydale, Healesville, Yarra Valley. There are lots of vineyards around as well and its seasonal type work. Everyone is so busy these days they like to get their gardens landscaped and then looked after so there is that industry as well. Good luck. Here in the Dandenongs there is a massive horticultural industry. Grandiflora was mentioned, but they grow roses for cut flower production. They are a family run business, but pretty big. I have quite a few friends in the pot plant/garden plant production, and many more in cut flower production. give me a bit more info, and I can point you in the right direction if you fancy Vic. I can also recommend quite a few more interstate, but the indusrty is much bigger here. Maybe if you PM me, I can put together a bit of info for you. Just let me know your preference of work. I run a garden maintenance business, looking after private gardens and commercial sites,covering all aspects of gardening including lawn care, pruning shrubs,maintainence of flower borders, hedge trimming and fruit tree pruning.I have Royal Horticultural Society qualifications. I have worked as a forester and a tree climber previous to setting up my business and have chainsaw competence certificates and pesticide(weedkilling) certs. Unfortunately I'm not in Oz yet no but we hope to move to Brisbane or the Gold Coast later this year or early next year... I went on holiday to Oz in July and visited Sydney, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Cairns... I loved all of it!!! Lots of Luck!!! Are you planning on bringing the Harley over ? Aus has some fantastic roads. Just got back from a 3.5hr ride this arvo. Cheers Rich Over here in Australia, you have Jims moving/garden maintenance/landscaping etc etc. These are franchises in the "jims" group of companies, and quite recently friends of mine set up a Jims mowing company. They tripled projected turnover in the first 5 months, and are already looking to sell the franchise, and are now going to continue with a Jims landscaping franchise. Another friend is more of a heavy duty landscaper, and does a lot of excavating, retaining walls, paths etc etc, and he also doesnt even have time to take a breath at the moment. Tree fellers is a very good trade to be in up in the Dandenong ranges because of the amount of gums in the area (bloody millions of the suckers) and they dont have a very long lifespan, and start dropping limbs of just simply fall over, so removing of pruning trees in the vicinity of power lines/houses etc is also a job in demand. In short, if you want work in your branch of expertise, you will have no problem at all finding work i'm sure. I also spoke to a couple of growers today about the general job situation for experienced horticulturalist, and both said that you would have no problem as well. I spent the last 21 years in Holland working on the Dutch flower auctions before moving down under 18 months ago. Been in the cut flower industry since leaving school.
