would Australia be in need of Teachers and Teaching Assistants?

My husband has been offered a job in Melbourne, and as i will be newly qualified as a Teaching Assistant, i wondered if they were crying out for that sort of person or are they already over run with that profession?

 

Would anyone know where to look for information on the shortage of particular professions that Australia are in need of ??

I dont know that "crying out" is the term I would have used but there are teaching assistant posts here - they may be different from what you are used to though. In general they tend to be more the bottom wiping, wheelchair pushing, reading aloud with a child type positions rather than the quasi professional positions which I understand the UK now has. However your training will be useful especially if it has incorporated any inclusion support. I think in Vic there are two sorts of aides - inclusion aides (for children with disabilities, require specialist training) and regular aides for general classroom assistance. They are quite popular though with mums who want school working hours because they have kids of their own.

There is nothing at the moment but as everyone is on holiday I am not surprised.

 

At the moment AFAIK the only thing Australia is crying out for is fruit pickers and we are importing a load of Pacific Islanders to do the job because the Aussies wont do it.

Hi, I am a teacher living in Melbourne. I am British and my OH Ozzie, so I worked in the Eastend of London for many years and we had TA's in every class: general and SEN.

Here in Melbourne I have only seen SEN TA's as the schools that I have worked at with many having parents who come in and help with reading groups. It maybe due to the class sizes. As in the uk my classes were always around 30 pupils, so I required a general TA. Whereas here, class sizes are generally alot smaller: 20-25. Maybe try and get voluntary work first and try and get in that way. I haven't seen a demand for this kind of position, but sure someone will correct me if I am wrong :unsure:

Hi, I have just been sent a list of jobs from www.emigrate2.co.uk and teaching assistants is on it. It even mentions sponsorship for the right candidates, Im not sure if this helps but there is always loads of info on there and you could also try www.thisisaustralia.com

The teaching assistant job with sponsorship is under the heading of general jobs on the emigrate website and the salary is $41000
