Guest lovediving Posted November 20, 2008 Share Posted November 20, 2008 There must be a lot of Brits in this country that are on work visa's with sponsorship and are or have lost their jobs during this recession. What would you do, as dont you have to get re-sponsored by another company to remain in the country or will you have to go home if you cannot find work. There is no help for people on Visas for benefits so I guess there would be no choice in the matter. Yes the minister was saying a few weeks ago that the 457 visa holders would be the first to leave in a downturn. No matter where you turn, it looks like people are being made redundant and we are beginning to see the closure of small businesses. Cutbacks have to occur everywhere and many service industries are the first casualities (usually by stealth)... just cast your mind back to the previous recessions in the 80's and early 90's. Yes the IT industry is dire, here's the thing it is a real question in my mind what to do with regards to the work situation. I have heard that so many of my friends and colleagues in the IT industry in UK have been laid off and whilst others are seriously in trouble and cannot find work whilst here there is very few jobs or contracts on offer. In normal economic circumstances decisions to move back to the UK would not be such an issue but now it weighs heavily on my mind, I do have dual nationality (NZ) but cannot even contemplate the disaster it would be to run out of money in Australia with no job prospects and no assistance..... The Australian CEO of a big multi-national (a pom) stated that the UK would have a recession deeper and longer than the US. That got my attention! He said it was because the UK had run down its manufacturing base in favour of financial market industries (ie London as the financial capital of Europe). This meant the UK economy as a whole would deflate more than most countries. He also said Australia was better placed than most due to mining and China. ali Posted November 20, 2008 Share Posted November 20, 2008 In the health service there may be a move from employing casual/agency staff whose rates are higher to offering permanent contracts.
