Don't think of your self as "less than an equal" you are who you are and don't listen to all the crap about changing just to fit in. Be your self and if they don't like it ............em!

I understand what you're saying but if we don't try to fit in then we will end up with a situation like we have in the UK where people segregate themselves (because they are different) and make micro communities and then the real problems begin.

I've worked and socialised with many Aussies and I've found them to be funny, laid back and apart from a bit of banter about criminal ancestors and rugby/cricket generally very easy to get on with. Maybe they fit in here better than we fit in there???

Aussies are very easy to get on with. They have a very north england sense of humour as I recall it. Self deprecating and love taking the micky out of each other. They love sporting banter... one thing they soon realise I know nothing about. :biglaugh:

Assimilation is sometimes considered a dirty word here but I would ignore the theorists, look after number one and integrate (without going too native of course old chap!).

i agree that loads of poms are on the sites, and a lot of sites i have been on have british management on them, i find its more the employers who are taking you onto the sites that are the problem, but they have no choice but to employ us as there really is a big shortage of skilled tradesmen, without us it would probably come to a stand still, they dont have to like it, they just have to put up with it.

I was talking to my best friend today who lives in Brisbane and an aussi and asked her about the subject. She said she had heard nothing about anyone being not welcome. We laughed as she said not many queenslanders south of Brissie these days.

Think things are getting a bit tight in the building industry, especially in the south. Most places would be like that, look after your own, etc. Wouldn't be any different in the UK.

Hi

I had various jobs whilst in australia also have two sisters that have been in australia for years and have had no difficulties in getting work. You meet prats all over the world, it's definately not a general thing to happen. Best of luck

Don't believe it the Aussies are no diffrent to us. Some lazy some here nor there but met lots who are definatly not lazy and worked as hard as any Brit would.

Same thing will be said to an Aussie over hear.

I feel it is different in the UK ... my hubby works for a guy who employs 4 Polish, said they are great workers but there are so many English tradesmen who are now struggling. I dont think the UK do look after their own, but know it is like that in Oz and just hope that there are enough jobs to go round for English brickies in Perth so my husband can find work.

I had a bit of a disturbing conversation with a guy who said that Poms are being turned away for jobs on building sites and Australians are going straight on.

He told me of his friend who has just returned from Oz after 3 months (he's a plumber/gas fitter). He went through all the tests and qualifications to work.

He applied for jobs and got the impression that as soon as they heard the UK accent they didn't want to know. It was the same with his Wife as soon as she opened her mouth the job was gone.

What's the deal here???

Are we being victimised for being Poms???

I'm not going to go through all the hassle and expense of getting to Oz if there's going to be nothing there for me!!!

Has anyone else heard anything like this???

hello tom, im not even there yet but ive been on the phone this morning to adelaide and was offered plenty of work,im a bricky btw. i wouldnt take any notice of the scare stories, but at the end of the day you can only find out one way cant you? im sure there will be people on here in a much better position than me to advise you on this, but im going anyway and find out for myself, good luck anyway

I think Australians prefer UK migrants and I speak like an Aussi so have never experienced what it feels like to be different but my oh has a geordie accent and he says he has never experienced any anti brit feeling in the 30 years plus he has lived here. Where he works there are Australians of all nationalities, Turks, German, Brits, Greek Aus NZ to name a few that I remember.

Some migrant groups do tend to employ their own but most just mix in.

Melbourne I feel is a very good place to be a migrant as no-one bothers who people are.

In my experience and that is Sydney, i have not found this to be the case , but horses for courses

as thay say,and as others have said it also depends on your employer ,if thay cant get anyone else

thay have to bite the bullet, i am a Carpenter & joiner and have worked both on sites and at the

bench i have found in a workshop situation you are more valued and a bit harder to replace

than a site carpenter so you are treated a bit better by Aussies, but hay this is just one experience it could also have somthing to do with being 6 foot 4 and 18 stone
