Guest moley Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 I hope someone can help me out, im hopefully leaving for Oz on a working Holiday Visa at the end of November im a carpenter but have done loads of different aspects of the building game and so have quite a few tools to ship over i've had a quote of between £162-£400 for the shipment but i really need some idea of the price of the import charges and tax the tools are probably worth in the region of £2500 (brand new), also do i pay the import charges in Oz or before i leave the U,K? If it helps the consignment is 1 Meter x 1 Meter x 500CM and will weigh around 50KG and last question can i cut the 3 pin plugs off and put new Oz plugs straight on or will i need an adaptor. Please help as i dont want to have to put them in storage if i can make good use. Thanks Andy.
Guest heieup Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 If you are bringing the items in as your own personal posessions then you don't need to pay import duty (as far as I am aware) unless they are new, or used for less than 12 months. Speak to an international shipper for details. Re plugs, It is my understanding that you can't just cut plugs off that they have to be done by an registered electrician for insurance purposes but you might need to check that for items used at work.
Guest deanrm Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Hi My OH is a Carpenter and he had his tools flown over, he is so pleased he did as we were going to sell them and buy new here. I think from what he has said it would of cost a fortune to replace them. Anyway, the whole process was not problem free, the parcles got split up and took over 2 weeks to get here, should of been more like 5 days - but they did all get here damage free. As long as they are all over 12 months old, I don't think you should pay import tax. We did however pay for Inspection once over here which was less than $100 for all 4 peices. Hope this helps.
