Hi is there anyone who can give me some advice about teaching in Oz. I seem to be struggling to get anywhere. I am a sixth form teacher in the UK, and specialise in psychology and sociology (social science).

I know that these subjects are not taught in schools, but there seems to be some social science cources in TAFE colleges and I am hpoing that I could gain employment there.

I think I can only do supply teaching with a work visa too. Is this right?

Also, does anyone know how to go about getting a police check as I can't get one done on myself in the UK, it has to be by the person who wishes to employ me!

IT'S ALL VERY CONFUSING!!!!

Cheers, emma

OK first thing is do you have a degree plus PGCE? if so then you can teach in schools in Aus. I dont know about the other states but we certainly do psychology as an option in years 11 and 12 and I think I have seen an HSC (NSW) mention of psych as well. Not a hugely popular option though I must admit.

Whether you can get a job here on a working holiday visa (is that what you meant by a working visa?) well I think that might be a bit more difficult. To teach in a school you need to be registered with Teaching Australia and then you need to go through the state registration process which can take ages and I dont know what the need is for psych teachers as psychology is a very popular option in Australia and there would be plenty out there wanting to teach it.

Have you thought of trying to get a one year exchange? That is a popular option for Australian teachers wanting to go and teach in UK? That would be the way to go if you only wanted a working holiday here. One Year Exchanges - League for the Exchange of Commonwealth Teachers

If you have a psych background, have you thought of branching out and doing Ed psych? you would walk into a job here any day of the week as school counsellors are scarcer than hens teeth!

If what you are after is a permanent move here then I think it is a case of get your visa whichever way, register with your state and then rock up and get a job.
