Guest wannabinoz Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Hi all, Have just been reading some of the treads posted by people coming back to the uk, often very negative but interesting reads and they get lots of replies. In perticular one by gags (i think) has taken up most of my morning. I have never been to oz in fact i have never rearly been anywhere very far a couple of holidays in france and spain is about the extent of my travels. I never did uni in fact i never rearlly did school either(although wish i had). I have always been to busy working so i can just about afford to pay the bills and support my family. I am know slowly (although not that slowly) watching the equity i have managed to buid up in my property dwindel away. The point of my post is to try and understand the reasons why i think i would like to move to a place i have never been and actually know very little about. I have a 3 year old little boy who i would like to have a better lifestyle than i can offer him in the uk. I worry about his working oppertunities in later life the work situation in the uk is not great and living off benfits seems to be a lifestyle choice which gives you a similiar standard of living to working. I would like him to have the chance of a childhood spent outdoors, rather than indoors in front of the tv hiding from the rain. We don't have the money to be doing exciting things every weekend, and when the weather is poor your choices are limited. I also have a daughter who is nearlly 16, i have no worries regards staying in the uk for her, she has allready proved to be a very level headed individual and i have no doubt will fullfill her potential in what ever she decides to do and where ever she is. She is however very keen on musical theatre and would love a carear on the stage and i wonder if moving to oz would have a negative impact on this ambition? I am also concerned it may not be the best age for her to move. But when is? I have a step-daughter who is about to turn 20 and does not live at home, obviously leaving her would be very dificult for me and my partner. However she would have the oppertunity to join us when ever she choose and i believe she would. A big advantage for all three of the children would be that they could eventually apply for dual nationality which would mean they would allways have the choice to go as and when they please with out all the hard work worry and stress that we all have to go through. I believe this to be a great position for them to all be in. I am 34 my partner is 37. I have just my mother, sister and nephews and nieces regards family ties and obviously my friends. Although i would miss these people i am quite confident that it would not ba a major obsticle for me to get over. My partner has a large family and a very close network of friends that she would miss terribly. I am a recently qualified plumber and my partner have recently qualified as a Holistic therapist. We both have done several years in the childcare industry my partner working in special needs schools as have i, i have also worked in childrens homes and spent 5 years driving a taxi as well as several other unskilled jobs before all this (not sure why i am saying all this). Work to me is very much a means to an end. I would do what ever work pay's best to give my family the best possible lifestyle. What i want from oz: Weather, having only recently given up the taxi driving i am very much enjoying the weekends with my family. Although the weather has turned it is know goona be harder to find things to do. Oz would mean i hope that most weekends could be spent outside. I also hope oz will offer me more hours of daylight in particular in the winter (is this right?) Lifestyle, I am not looking for mega riches (although would be nice) I don't live in a major city but still find everything very hectic and rushed. I would like a child friendly environment where things happen at my own pace. Days in the green countryside and days on the beach sound superb. I would like my son to have the chance to try many different sports. In the uk i find it can be difficult to access certain sports and even the common one's eg; football is cancalled every other weekend because of the weather. What i would miss from the uk: Music, i love my music and don't imagine that oz will give me the same level of new bands etc (pretty sure i can live with this) Football, I love my football, Can't imagine i will see a lot of my beloved West Ham down under. Tv in oz is apparantly rubbish, But it is here anyway (problem solved) I think i have gone on enough, If anyone managed to read to the end without falling asleep please pass comment, give advice, whatever you like all feed back much appreciated. P.s : we have looked at adelaide and brisbane as places we may like to go. P.p.s : maybe we should travel about for 6 months when my daughter has finished school, We would have to wrk as well, how would this work????????????
Petals Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Today I drove down to the Egg Farm to pick up the eggs and then oh and I went over to Bunnings and I thought about the forum. I thought about people who were unhappy and what they missed and I looked around with their eyes, you see I am used to what I see I have lived here for thirty years but new arrivals have not. What they see is often a bit like outback America, broken down houses on some land, not so green as the UK, not many old buildings around and probably being new would not know which are the old ones anyway and which are the Australian Heritage. These are all things you learn as you live here and these things become dear to you as you become Australianised. What people have to do is realise its different, I have said that so many times. Also if you love your family and love your friends they are no longer around the corner and for women this is often a big problem. Reading the forums there seem to be more women who are unhappy than men. Of course there are men too. This has always been the case. My mum was desperately unhappy for a long long time but my Dad refused to return to the UK and it was make or break time for them. I have lived in the UK as a child and as an adult and I love the UK and I could live there if that is what my oh had wanted but my oh never wanted to live there. So we live here and I am happy here too. I am happy to be with my immediate family. Friends are not my immediate family and although I love my friends I have to do right by my immediate family. So do what you feel you have to. Forget the ads for a start, living here is nothing like the ads. Good luck whatever you decide. If you are well prepared want to do it then you will succeed. If you come and compare you will be unhappy. Only my view. .
Guest wannabinoz Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Thanks, thats a great reply. I have no doubts that i could be happy there. The people i want around me would be there. I worry about my partner thou. Life is what you make it, where ever you are.

steveNem Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Forgetmenot thats a great post. I was an exchange student to Brazil when I was 18 and on landing at Sao Paulo airport the first thing the group leaders said to us scared bunch of teenagers was 'this place is not better or worse than where you have just come from, its just different' Dont compare just live it. Best advice I ever recieved. We arent in Oz yet. Im an Aussie but been living in the UK for 10 years so I know all my opinions and view are probaly out of date. Its a leap of faith. But you have to work at it, nothing in life is easy, you have to make it work for you in ways you probaly havent thought of before. Im rambling now. Sorry Em
Guest Inky1978 Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Firstly let me say this is a great post. I'm sitting here now questioning why I feel Australia is the place I want to be. Like you I have never been (though my girlfriend has spent 18 months in OZ in 2000), I have a close family who I see pretty much every week. Any problems or help that I need, I can always call any one of my family. I have a well paid job (though I no longer enjoy it). Looking at it I wonder, why do I want to leave? Though I have reasons to stay, I still feel I should go and at the very least give it a good go. My family, though I would miss them will always be my family. My sister lives in Florida USA, so if she can do it so can I. The job I do is transferable with the company I work for, to Australia (or for that matter pretty much anywhere in the world). I would love to see more of the world. I would like to have better weather, to be able to do things outside (Even just a BBQ every week would be fine by me). I want a life where I am not working all hours just to stay in the same place. By no means do I believe that Oz will be the answer to everything, it maybe but just as likely, it may not. The grass is not always greener on the other side, but it is different and that is the point. I want to try.

I rearlise the dual nationality would be a long way down the line, i just thing it would give the kids a great oppertunity to pick and choose where they wanna be, which i think would be a great position to be in.

I too am keen to broaden my horizens and see a bit of the world, it is not that i feel i must go to oz and have to like it more than england. I think it would be a great life experiance at the very least and at best it will be all i dream it will be.

Of course I hope that is lives upto my dreams as well. I wish you all the best of luck in chasing the dream.

Before moving a family out here I would definalty consider a reccie which although is nothing like living and working here will give you a feel of the place. Quality of life is a strange one, you can have a good standard in either Country...kids are kids and the youth over here get up to exactly the same as the youth in the UK e.g...on the computer all day and being a "kevin" from what I have seen. Crime and anti-social is about the same but the weather is better but still rains a lot in Perth and can be very cold. You can only decide for yourselves after giving it at least 12 months to see a summer as well as a winter....good luck. One question I can answer...it gets dark over here early unlike the UK in the summer...about 5 oclock.
