Barden Ridge, Sydney? Nice or not so nice?

Hi. We are moving to Sydney with hubbys job in December. He will be working in Hurstville, so we have been looking to try and find a rental in Sutherlandshire or thereabouts. We visited Sydney at the beginning of September and did have a good look around Sutherlandshire and it did seem very family orientated (we have two small children so we are after more of a family area than somewhere with nightclubs/bars etc - those days are long gone :( !). Anyways, we have been e-mailing real estate agents to try and pursuade them to let us organise a rental before we leave the UK. We have been contacted by one agent and told about a property that is well within our budget and on the details the house looks lovely. It is in Barden Ridge which, typically, was pretty much the only place in Sutherlandshire that we didn't look at!

Has anyone been there/lived there and what was it like?

I have looked on google maps etc, but there is only so much you can tell from satellite pics!

Any help/info would be great. Thanks!

Hello! We moved to Sydney 3 months ago, and after the 1 month in company accommodation are now living in Menai, in the "Shire" as they call it. As far as I can see, all places around here are good, laid back and family friendly. Barden Ridge is not far from here - haven't looked at in detail but I can do over the next couple of days if you wish.

I have 2 kids, 5 and 3, here and the parks etc are great.

Let me know if you need a bit more help - hey I may just take a look at Barden Ridge anyway out of interest!

Would you really do that for me?! It would be absolutely fantastic if you would, and incredibly kind of you. We have two children aged 2 1/2 and almost 8 months, so it is really important for me that we get it right. Because we are coming in December, I have found it difficult to find holiday rentals in our budget, so we decided to send (begging) e-mails to real estate agents to see if they would let us arrange a long-term let from the UK. The road that the property is listed on is Marsden Road, which is just off the New/Old Illawarra Road.

When we visited at the beginning of the month we drove all around, but typically didn't go to Barden Ridge!

If you had any other info/advice of your experiences of moving to/living in Sydney/Sutherlandshire, I would be very grateful too!

Sorry to be so cheeky!

I'll take a look around today, and send you a detailed response later. Its raining this morning - and a bank holiday weekend as well. Reminds me of the UK!

At least some things should be familiar then! Thank you so much. We'll buy you a pint when we get there!

Hello!

We had a look around today, and it is very similar to Menai, which I would expect as its only down the road! The street that you mention is very quiet, a mixture of single floor apartments and big detached houses. I think that its really 1/2 way between Barden Ridge and Menai. We had a look at Barden Ridge itselt, which again is very similar to Menai, in that its a family kind of place with a lot of big, detached houses. All of the areas around here are similar - Illawong, Alfords Point, Bangor.

Menai has shops, takeways, restaurants, petrol stations, a big park etc etc, which I couldn't see at Barden Ridge, which appeared to be houses and a church. Not saying thats a bad thing just letting you know. So in summary, you should be OK anywhere around here.

Good luck with sorting a house - it won't be easy as they are saying that renting is getting harder all the time. I know what you're going through, fresh from being there, doing it and having the t-shirt!

More than happy to spend some more time mailing you about the experience that we had moving here, and any other specific questions that you may have, just let me know what you want to know - you probably have a list that is 100 or so long - just let me know.

Honestly, I'm ok to do some looking around if you need - it gives us an excuse to look around the local area which you don't tend to do in such a big country.

And I look forward to the beer!

Cheers

Jon, hope you don't mind but I sent a few other questions about Sutherland Shire and Oz generally by PM. Thanks.
