Hiya Pinhead and Yes Welcome back to PIO

Talking of eating in the city we ate in China Town and it was lovely with a good atmosphere. I thought the city was good and the people friendly, only place that didnt do it for me was Frankston but I have heard they are supposed spending alot of money on Frankston to bring it back up to scratch!

I think we have concluded that Melbourne is not a dump, sorry Hayley lol

Frankston was an area even the locals said was full of 'ferral' people so definitely one to avoid at the moment.

I'd heard that they were putting a marina in at Frankston so it sounds like a lot of money is going in that direction. Lovely beach down that way.

Where I used to live backed onto China town, excellent central location & great food.

I grew up in Frankston and it is actually no where near as bad as people say. I had a ball growing up there - down the beach every day during the summer holidays, scouts, cinemas, etc...There is no doubt it is full of bogans but regardless, it is not even 10% as bad as people make out.

And that is based on 20 years ago. I was back there this April on holiday and it is amazing how different it is. Still bogan central but it has really pulled it self up but still, the old prejudices stay...like I said in my eariler post. I admit when I move back to Melbourne soon it won't be to Frankston though ;-) To far out for me.

I will never to my head around Frankston High School being so sought after these days though :wideeyed:

We've been living in Melbourne without out two boys for a year and a half now and we love it. There is so much sport and community here, the beaches (while not amazing) are more than adequate and there is a least some sense of culture here.

The weather has rained non stop since we arrived 3 weeks ago and has been freezing - the locals say Spring will only come in November. Thats a few more months of miserable weather. Dont come to Melbourne if you are moving to Oz for the weather, its no better than the UK...!

What a load of rubbish. The weather is not great during the Winter and you came at it's height. If your idea of bliss if 365 days of sunshine Victoria is not for you. However we have Seasons here and it's nice to have a break from the 40'c+ temps in the Summer. Summer last years was off the charts so I'm not sure what you're on about it being the same as the UK.

A three weeks holiday is not the same as living here.

The drive back from the airport to our accommodation through Melbourne was awful. The streets are awful, I was shocked at the amount of grafitti that is everywhere. I had heard there was graffiti, and this didnt bother me as I know that most cities do. But, I have never seen a city with as much graffiti as here - and I have visited many countries. Not a good first impression.

As for graffiti, there are some urban areas where there is more graffiti than elsewhere. Where we are there is almost zero. In the CBD the graffiti is considered art and the lanes are coated in them and even exhibitions are shown. Melbourne is an artistic, creative, city.

I had also heard that Melbourne had many great restaurants. Where are they? I have looked around the city, and all the restaurants I have seen look like school cafeterias, very small, run down, with only one or two customers, I wouldnt want to eat in any of them.

Did you visit the same city that we live in ? Where you staying in Craigieburn or something ? There are HUNDREDS of restaurants, cafes and bars all over Melbourne. Just walking down Southbank and through the Lanes you'll find a hundred of them.

Good luck in Queensland :nah:

Like all cities the nicest parts cost money.

You obviously have not been to all parts and therefore have not been able to make an informed decision.

Yet even in the most beautiful and liveable inner suburbs there will always be someone blagging it down as being too expensive. Correct answer but what do you expect, value costs money.

The real question or point to be raised is Melbourne is not cheap and if you come short of dosh you will end up in a slum.

Hi Bigape, I hope PIO dont mind the link as I really enjoyed reading what the Britvic members had to say. Especially the comment abt using Public Transport, as I have to say this is when I was put off as the train lines do not go through the most desirable areas anyway really so you are bound to see some rundown places and of course normally where there is public transport there is graffiti and lowts hanging about.

I think the the 'Melbourne is a Dump' was harsh, as you cannot see the whole of Melbourne in a few weeks, maybe this or that area is a dump , but not Melbourne that is a huge generalisation.

Having said all that we are of the Brisbane which gets it's fair share of bashing too, but we will try and it and if it's not for us will move on somewhere else as surely there has to be a state for everyone as they are all so different:cool:

Well I'm glad that not everyone likes Melbourne, I certainly wouldn't want it ruined by having too many poms living there.

I cant believe I am doing this but here goes!

The OP is right to a point I don't think the restaurants in the CBD are the best and most are cafe style as its mostly sandwiches business people want for there lunch! that said China town has some fantastic restaurants but it also has some that are just OK. As a local I know where to go.

Personally I don't think the food on Lygon street is fantastic the atmosphere on a warm night makes up for it though! I would take a vistor there for a meal but i'd rather eat at an italian restaurant in Rathdown Street that is tucked away and most people dont know about it BUT you need to book to get a table!!!

I think most of the better restaurants are out of town! but as a vistor to Melbourne would I know about these???? I think also some/most people are to frightened of getting lost or mugged so they don't venture to far from there hotel, so it can be hit or miss.

South Bank has some wonderful restaurants Over priced???!!! The Crown casino I think that is the best restuarant in the CBD(the one up the stairs where you sit by the window and look out over the yarra)

I think sometimes people are put off by what they see and if your 1st impression is of graffiti (so it looks run down) your 1st few meals are not the best its raining its hard to change your mind.

Melbourne is much more than that after a while you don't see the grafitti, you see the wide open tree lined streets the clissic old buildings the wide open feel of the place.

Melbourne has a wonderful feel to it, when the holiday feeling goes away when the WOW factor has gone of the other states and your real life starts, this is when Melbourne comes into a class all of its own.

Personally the longer you stay the more the place feels like home and thats when the WOW factor starts.

Good luck to all that love the place and to the rest when the WOW factor leaves you and you question if Australia is for you. Just remember Victoria is not to far away and will welcome you with open arms.

Geoffrey

Right, enough of this rubbish about Melbourne's restaurants. You can have an opinion about the quality of food or service of an individual place, but cut the "I don't think the restaurants in the CBD are the best and most are cafe style" cr*p. As a local, you clearly have no clue where to go, so please stop trying to give people bad advice. You as bad as the original poster. And what are you babling on about the Crown Casino ? It has 12 restaurants listed in it's Premium Section alone.

Jamie Oliver said during the programme about setting up Fifteen Melbourne that he was worried about opening here because there is so much competition at a very high level. In the CBD alone there fantastic places to eat, such as Flower Drum, The Press Club, Vue de Monde, Taxi, Grossi Florentino, MoVida Bar de Tapas, Yu-U, and Fifteen Melbourne. If you haven't heard of these, then look them up, and then you will realise how foolish that statement about the CBD is. You might as well tell me that you can't get a decent cup of coffee here

To those of you reading this who are trying to decide about Melbourne, simply ignore the first post in this thread. Visit Melbourne, take some time to look around, and you will appreciate just how rich and diverse a city it is. I can assure you that after 3.5 years of being here, there is still loads that we haven't done and plenty to enjoy at any time of the year. I espcially recommend reading any of the sites that review restaurants, such as /www.yourrestaurants.com.au , and experience just how good Melbourne's restaurants are.

To the original poster, I take it when you refer to Brisbane's beaches, you mean the man made one on the South Bank, because Brisbane doesn't have any other beaches ? As far as I am concerned, anyone who prefers Brisbane over Melbourne is more than happy to settle for the medicore. If you thought Melbourne's restaurants weren't any good, you are going to be in for a huge shock in Brisbane.

Well said

The problem with attracting people with no taste is the general value drops as customer expectations/levels of satisfaction decrease.

Therefore we should encourgage people such as the OP to search out Brisbane and its beaches.
