494 - Will apply alone; will not include wife and son

Hi everyone! This is my first post. Glad to have found this forum, a treasure trove of info!

I'm offshore. Been working for an Australian company as an outsourced employee for 4 years now. My employer and I are in talks about sponsoring me via 494. He already consulted with an immigration agent and everything is looking okay at the moment.

But there's one problem though. My 2 yo son was diagnosed as at risk for autism spectrum disorder (no final verdict from his doctor yet). He's been undergoing occupational therapy (6 mos now) and speech therapy (1 month now).

My plan at the moment is that if ever my employer and I commence my application, I will not include my wife and my son in the application. The reason is that it is very likely that our application will be refused because of my son's condition. However, I read on the Immi website: "If requested, family members not accompanying you to Australia might also need to meet our health requirement." Any idea what type of situation will compel the Immigration to require non-applicant family members to provide medicals?

For context. Our plan is that I will work in Australia, save up some money so the three of us can eventually migrate to Canada (student visa pathway) as they don't refuse visa applications based on autism. I just wish that Australia is more welcoming to people with autism as we really prefer it than Canada.

I believe anyone staying long term in Australia requires a medical. They base it off how likely it is that someone’s medical condition is to cost the government in resources, so whether your son needs extra teaching support, respite care, medical costs etc. I would probably consult with a migration agent

For context. Generally immediate family members will need medicals/character to checks, even if they are not migrating. Its partly because there are various health waivers that can come into play if they later apply for a Spouse Visa, so the government wants checks done when the first family member migrates, so there are no issues down the line.

What you have to remember is a child here with  Autism takes a lot of time and money processing everything . For you to bring a child over with Autism is nothing to do with welcoming people with it here . It all about medical care and Australia does not have a never ending flow of money in the medical field .You are allowed so much in medical care and if it looks likely that figure will go over then they might refuse .  My grandson has it , born here and has still cost a lot  with  specialist appointments  , help at the school . Some parents can wait 2 years for these appointments and for help . Sadly people cannot expect to migrate here and instantly expect all the help . If Canada can do it good on them but all countries are not the same .

Canada can do it because autism support (except for very basic help) is a private paid for service by the family/patient

Hello steveshe, thank you for sharing your insights. Your grandson is in my thoughts. We've experienced the same here in the Philippines. There are only 70 specialists in a country with almost 110 million people. Getting an appointment for diagnosis is extra challenging plus expensive. If you set up an appointment with the public hospital, it will take at least 1 year to get called up. People's flawed idea of children with ASD are just kids who need "disciplining" or who lack proper decorum, is not helping either. To clarify, I was not wishing for any support for my child from the Aus government, I was just hoping the Immi will review its policies (as what Welcoming Disability campaign is currently pushing for now) and make health waivers not as not complicated as they are now. My apologies for being unclear with my post. Cheers!

I have a colleague who has a non-verbal autistic child who has just been granted $40k + in annual support from NDIS, plus continuing supported placement at a special school.  I would not give much for her chances of being granted an Australian visa. Just as well she is an Australian citizen. 

I have paid numerous times for hospital treatment for relatives in RP, who were not going to be discharged until they had paid the bill, as is the usual practice. I undergo eye treatment about every 3 months under Medicare for which I pay less than $200. The current cost in RP is 80000 (80K) PhP. Mrs Russell is in NV visiting family and recuperating from major surgery that cost her nothing under Medicare. She is due back on 29 July.

In general terms visa applicants must meet the health criteria for the duration of their proposed stay. The only Australian visa that does not have health criteria attached is a medical treatment visa. Whether this might be of benefit to you, I cannot say.
