Raplin45
Hey Folks, For info in case people are keeping an eye on 491 for SA generally (I know everyone's situation is different but I tend to watch people's timelines like a hawk ) - Our timeline so far - State nomination application was put in 05/05, was approved on 13/05 and our visa application was then lodged on 23/05 once all the lovely paperwork/evidence was pulled together. We had requests for medicals come through almost immediately so have those this Thursday then it'll be a waiting game again for the grant all being well. 90 points including state - Engineering Technologist. I've been seeing a fairly decent turnaround time for SA 491s on forums/Facebook groups so fingers crossed things progress quickly for all us in that limbo period!!

First of all congrats and good luck! we currently have an eoi in but for a 190 for NSW engineering technologist but were not holding out for this! currently not on any other lists so waiting and hoping for some changes in July A more specific query my partners role is in aeronautical engineering but was skilled assessed as engineering technologist and we are finding you have to be an australian citizen for the majority of these roles so we are concerned about him securing a job at all even if we get over there, have you found this at all or are you in a different industry? thanks Edited June 12, 2022 by Aimee25

So my understanding is you have to have "the right to work in Australia" for most roles I've seen which on whichever skilled visa you end up would be the case. Also, the visa is granted based on a particular skill-type but you are not bound to work in that industry, as long as you fulfil the requirements of the visa I.e. commit to whichever state/region etc. then you're all good. Hope that helps a little?

There are some jobs where just having the right to work (i.e. a valid visa) is not enough. For anything that requires a security clearance, e.g. working in defence or government positions, you have to be a full Australian citizen. It's certainly a small percentage of jobs that require citizenship, but unfortunately if you're a specialist in a field where the only employers are defence or government, you're basically stuffed until you can get your citizenship. Obviously you can get some other job for four years, but taking that time away from your field isn't going to be good for career development either. Remember Australia's population is only one-third the size of the UK so the opportunities are correspondingly smaller too. It's a rollercoaster of a journey (she says, having not made it there yet but maintaining realistic optimism ) but there's opportunities to make it work, you've just gotta be flexible and roll with the punches I guess. Best of luck with stuff. I hope it all works out for you

You could also try connecting with them, or with agencies that handle that kind of job, on Linkedin.
