Thank you for all replying.

I was officially offered one of the jobs last night! Company have said they'll do the 186 de visa so we'll have permanent residency. They have said they'll pay towards some of the costs, provide 1 months accommodation and 3 months car hire.

Has anyone else been offered a relocation package and would you say that sounds reasonable?

Feeling a bit overwhelmed/excited/nervous at the minute!

  • Congratulations 5

Actually that's not quite true in all cases, taking them for a simple Big Mac in Lismore is a bit dangerous at the moment...

Never had a relocation package but anything you can get is a bonus.

1 months accommodation will save you around $5000 and the car hire around $5000 also.

Congratulations and no excuses now

Congratulations!

A relocation package is normal if you are offered a 482 visa, because otherwise you would end up seriously out of pocket.

A 186 DE visa is a different kettle of fish, because that will give you PR and that's valuable in itself.  So I'd say the relocation package is a real bonus and it sounds very reasonable to me.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I just need to start gathering documents now. Seems to be so much Im not sure where to start.

The company will hire a migration agent to do their part of the application, as their part is the most complex and time-consuming.  It's up to you whether you hire your own agent to do your bit.

We are going to go as its too good an opportunity to pass up.

I had a relocation package of shipping, flights for the (then) 3 of us and a months accommodation. We didnt get a car hire.

I'd say it seems very good

I've had the contract sent through. They've said they have a migration agent that will work with me, which is really helpful as is very daunting.

How are you all getting on in oz? Are you happy you made the move?

There are two parts to the application:  their part and your part.  Completely separate.  They've hired an agent to do their bit and they've offered you his/her services as a bonus, which is nice.  However, be aware that the agent has been hired to act in the best interests of the employer, which may not be the same as your best interests.   They sound like they're donig the right thing but it pays to be cautious.

It is daunting and it will be right until you get on that plane.

We have all loved it since getting here, there's pros and cons but overall more pros.

The advantage for you is that if it doesn't work out your costs aren't as significant as someone like myself who has paid for everything.

Congratulations on your job offer and the relocation package.   I totally get why you and your family want to have an adventure, and your age is pivotal to this if Australia is your destination on a permanent residency visa.   Go for it I say, and just remember that it doesn't have to be permanent if you decide along the track that it isn't for you.   At least you have tried it, and sometimes we all need to leave our comfort zone to find out whether we really want a different life or not.   There is no shame in deciding that it wasn't for you, but at least you will have tried it.   Then of course you might find that it is really working for you and you will be glad you made the move.

As far as your family's reactions go, so many of us have had the same issue in one way or another.   My situation was a little different in that I emigrated to WA in my early 40's having lost my husband, and with 2 young children aged 5 and 8. So I came to join my entire family who had already made the move to WA.   As a family, we had all travelled back and forth to visit each other for 20 odd years, so I knew well what I coming to, and none of us had disrespected each other for our choice of where to live.   Friends though were a totally different issue.   My best friends, who I had known most of my life and who were God Parents to my children, and I was God Parent to theirs, and who I considered family, just totally cut us off from the date we emigrated 30 years ago.   I tried explaining that it wasn't anything against them and we would be visiting UK, that they could come and have holidays with us, that we could keep in contact with letters etc (pre internet days of course), but they just said we were deserting them and if we loved them we would stay in UK.    My reply was that if they really loved us they would understand why I needed to be with my parents, only brother, only Aunt and only cousins.   Most friends were very supportive, but this was the friend who I thought of as a sister.   I tried for years to keep the relationship going, but my letters were never replied to, so I gave up in the end.   In retrospect I now see that their reaction was quite normal for people who are selfish, and I think that if you really love someone, you want what is best for them, and not what makes you comfortable.

My children are now in their late 30's.   My son is an Engineer and has travelled the world and worked in various places on contracts, and one of these contracts was on a mine in Central North Queensland.   His off work time was spent on the Gold Coast with family friends, and that is now where he has bought a house and settled with his beautiful partner, and my first grandchild will be born soon.   I love that he has found his "place", and until covid hit the world, I used to visit 4 or 5 times a year, as he did coming back to WA.   If you truly love someone you need to let them fly where their life is meant to be.

So do what you feel that you need to do.   It is your life.

Congratulations - you have the dream ticket here!  After 6 months in Perth we are settling in nicely.  Honestly the biggest worry has been getting a job and the kids settling in, our 13 year old has taken a while but now has made friends here and is chatting to them more than those in the UK.  You have the job nailed already, so you are halfway there.  Enjoy!

  • 1 month later...

As a Mum and Grandma I now get it . We moved to Australia leaving one adult Son behind .
20 yrs later 3 trips to the UK and never forgiven .
life is short good times and bad in any county.
Advice if you intend to return to the UK ever do it before your children grow up .
UK had lots of positivity too .
Family …. That is you and wife and kids .

Due to my husbands health we are having to return before pension age 67 😡

Heartache for leaving sons and grandchildren here …Son and Grandson have their own life in UK so we are starting yet another chapter in our life 🙄
Husband has brothers and sisters in uk so a good support system 🙃time will tell . People get over that you left and live their lives without you .
So do what’s the very best for you . No where in this Earth is SAFE.
Life has changed in just a few years .
Do what makes you and family here happy . The grass is always greener on the other side till your on these new grass . Same problem just different grass .Wishing you a happy life .

Forgot to say you definitely need Private Health Care in Oz and it’s very expensive . Our 3 Sons were into all sports and you need the cover . See if the company will offer it in the package .
We had a migration agent from the company it helped . All 3 kids did not want to come to Oz 20 yrs later they are Australian not English now . Get full citizenship asap gives you a sence of belonging .

Disagree on the private health care.  It’s a waste of money

I would've said the same thing for many years.  Nowadays, I'm changing my view, because I've met people who don't have it, and they've shelled out a lot less for medical  care than I have over my lifetime.  The private health funds do a great job of conning you into thinking they're necessary.

Of course if you can get it in an employment package, grab it.  Also if you are young enough and earning enough to get slugged for the Medicare surcharge - because getting private health insurance avoids the surcharge.

However I'm married to a man who worked all his life in insurance and he cancelled his health insurance 30 years ago.  If you put the money you would've spent on health insurance into a savings account, use the public health system and pay for private when you need it, you'll end up WAY ahead.

The problem is that once you have private health insurance, GPs send you into the private system for everything without question, and you get used to it (and used to forking out for "gap" payments, as private never covers everything).  On the few occasions i've ended up in the public system, I've been astonished how short the waiting time has been, and how good the care has been.  In fact, I'd say I had better treatment from specialists in the public system than in the private system - and it cost me absolutely nothing.

An example - I had a spinal fusion.  The op cost $30,000 and I was still about $10,000 out of pocket at the end.  A friend's dad had the same op on the public system.  He thought he'd have a long wait but it was onyly 6 weeks.  Same op, same intensive care, same success - totally free.

Even if you do need it or use it, private health insurance will rarely cover everything - there will always almost be some form of co-payment, and it can be a significant sum. Self-funding will almost always work out cheaper in the long run than PHI.
