Moving from Sydney to Sunshine Coast

Hi, we are thinking to move to Sunshine Coast, currently we are living in Sydney for 13 years in our first house. I don't know how to start, as I never experience moving house to house or even interstate. For the school also we never have experience for searching before we put our children in their current school. it just happened the school where we live is a good school. I have a friend in Tewantin, she suggested us to move around there. We've been there and I like the area as it close to Noosahead. but again we also still open for any other areas. If anyone can help me will really appreciate it. Thanks

Tewantin  is beautiful, all of the Noosa area is, but it also carries a nice price tag, especially since Covid hit and lots of people have moved to QLD. Have you had a look on realestate.com to check out whats available? It will give you a guide to rental and purchase costs of Tewantin and surrounding areas (Noosaville is nice too, Perigan springs and Coolum a bit further down are also quite  popular areas).

Thanks, yes we were there on thee 4th ogf Jan til 7 and we love there area more  because its close to  Noosa, if we moved there we already have friends there. It just to decide either we buy there or rent talso still in consideration, my friend said better rent first before buying but we just dont want to move house so many times. My husband is 100% certain to move but  I still have  so many questions to move there. Ive been looking in realestate.com for houses around Tewantin, Nooosa,  Perigian spring and beach n Coolum too.

I was thinking that renting before you buy would give you the chance to experience "living" there, as opposed to "holidaying" there.  I'd say the same thing if you were moving interstate somewhere else in OZ or going back to the UK, "just in case" you decide it is not for you.  You might miss Sydney!

I'm planning to rent a holiday apartment in Surfers by the month,  see if I settle in again,  maybe try staying in a couple of other places, eg Main Beach. Maybe I should try Noosa too.

If you rent you have time to look at houses in person without committing yourselves.

Before I went to Surfers in July, 20, I'd hardly been there either,  except for hols. I didn't plan anything when I went other than to escape going thru another lockdown on my own.  I stayed for eight months and would have stayed longer had I not had things to do in Sydney. 

I love Surfers Paradise  I know plenty who hate it but I love having everything I need within walking distance.  I describe it as "Surry Hills (my home in Sydney) with a beach." It's 7 kilometres to the Eastern Subs beaches from here but Surfers beach was barely 5 minutes walk from the Hilton. Restaurants,  bars, cafes, shops, doctors, dentists all five minutes walk, and if I needed to go further - specialist doctors in Southport, Pacific Fair, Broadbeach, Main Beach - the excellent tram line  is outside the Hilton. 

I don't need a car living in Surry Hills but if I do I can rent Go Get for 2 or 3 hours from practically outside my flat, or get an Uber, or the bus outside my door,  or 10 min walk to Central for the train and tram. I don't need a car in Surfers either.  The few times I went in the car with my brother up or down the GC Highway, into the Hinterland,  up to Brisbane - I hated it - as bad as driving in Sydney.

The  crowds (which I don't usually like) and the touristy atmosphere I don't mind because I don't have to drive or park. I liked the buzz and I liked Xmas Day with everything open. And after 8 months I became a local.  I joined the surf clubs - Surfers, Northcliffe,  one beginning with "K" in Broadbeach.  I was starting to get to know people and I like the warmer weather in winter  

The sort of questions I'm interested in about Noosa would be the same as Surry Hills or Surfers. Is everything I need within walking distance? Are there seven day doctors? What's the public transport like? Do I NEED a car? What is the traffic like? 

They are not the same questions that other people might ask. They might want to live out in the burbs,  hate the noise and bustle of the town centre, expect to drive to the shopping centre or the mall. Surfers has a smallish mall - Paradise Centre (?) But adequate for my needs and three supermarkets plus a 24 hour IGA.

If you don't mind me asking, what made you choose the Sunshine Coast? . How long have you lived there? What made you move there? The reason I ended up in Surry Hills was the slightly sad fact that I could not cope with crowded public transport from Narrabeen on the Northern Beaches to Sydney where I worked. Narrabeen is not unlike some of the beach suburbs on the GC - Miami say? My parents bought a house there and we ask lived there once again as a family for the final time.  Living in my own there I was isolated though. I still go there once a year for a nostalgic trip.

To be honest,  it's possible I won't like Surfers the second time around.  My brother is still there but what if he goes? I have a little social network here.  One of my friends is isolating with Covid and I took him supplies, the sort of thing he would do for me.  I have a spare key for his place and he has one for mine. It takes a while to build those networks.

I can’t really answer your questions sorry, as I hardly ever go to Noosa, I don’t know much about public transport there, but Noosa isn’t very big, it adjoins Noosaville plus Noosa Civic, So there might be buses? It’s about 2 hours from Brisbane, but if it’s like the Sunshine Coast which is about 1.15 hr from Brisbane, there is no bus service from here to Brisbane. Our only option is a train from Landsborough  to Brisbane and buses do connect with the trains from Mooloolaba. 

The only road to Brisbane can be a nightmare if there is an accident, but only takes 75 minutes on a clear run.  We have loads of Drs and specialists here, bulk billed and 7 day Drs, but again I can only speak for the local Mooloolaba and Maroochydore & Buderim surrounding area.

We took a chance to move to this area, we live 5 mins from the coast, wanted a village type area to feel part of a community. There is more life in Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Caloundra because they are tourist areas, and there is a bus service between them.

Hope some of that helps, but I wonder if the area might be a bit too quiet after Surry Hills or the Gold Coast.

Thanks for that information. I was just looking at Google Maps to see where Landsborough is located - a long way from Noosa if you are relying on public transport? The last time I was in Noosa was a decade ago I think. I was on a road trip, having crossed the border from NSW north of LIghtning Ridge, then I stayed at St George (nice town), Dalby, Gympie before turning south. I think I overnighted at Caloundra then Kirra before heading back into NSW and taking a week to get back to Sydney.

I don't actually crave noise and hustle and bustle. It's just the way things have worked out. I live on one busy road - Elizabeth Street - and I'm 100 metres from a busier one - Cleveland Street. That's the trade-off for the convenience of living in the inner city. In some ways it's like living in a village without a green belt around it. I used to like walking around the perimeter of my village in England - Marchwood. I'd never experienced city living until I came to OZ. Surfers is actually relatively quiet once you get away from Cavill Ave and Orchid Ave, quiet during the week too but busy from Thursday nights.

I made a request yesterday to drive a car from Sydney to Coolangatta Airport from Thursday with Transfercar. It's just like renting a car except you get it for free. I've never done it before. Last time I went to Surfers I hired a car one-way to Coolangatta Airport which cost me over $500. If you have the time you can make your way around OZ delivering cars, campervans, utes. I guess it's like me with my one way rental; the car hire companies want to get their vehicles back to the home depots. M R you would use Landsborough. Station from the Mooloolaba area. Noosa might use Nambour station? I really don’t know if that’s the nearest.

If you liked Surfers i do think the Sunny Coast areas would be too quiet. Noosa is pretty much one small street, Mooloolaba not much bigger. Stunning places but worlds apart from Surfers Paradise.

I thought Noosa would be busy? I looked on Booking.com for accommodation and there seemed to be plenty, no skyscrapers I guess.  I love looking at the towers but I'm scared of heights or rather scared of the balconies so I'll request a low level room if I don't stay in a 3 level place.

If my brother had chosen Noosa, or somewhere else I'd have gone there.  I don't think he likes Surfers despite going back. He stayed in Redcliffe for a few days and he liked it there.

Most of the year, Noosa is a quiet, laidback kind of place.   We went there in the week before Christmas and it was just like any other small town along the NSW coast, if you've been to any of those.  Then on Boxing Day, the place was suddenly packed out, tourists and cars everywhere.  One of the shopkeepers told me the population more than doubles on Boxing Day and stays that way all January, the bars are lively and the restaurants busy, then it shuts down again.

Well we thinking to go there again upcoming easter holiday to look around, maybe booking for schools tours and house inspections while we there, hubby already 100% want to move. We live in Silverwater in sydney. Im not typical city person or crowded place to live same with hubby. Surry Hill is definitely a busy suburb as it close to the city with small sizes of houses. Now hubby also thinking of renting first before buying house there. The problem is my kids will be meeding of school. so we kinda afraid of keep moving out n will have to wait for long to adjust adn settle down. Yes we went to Noosa and we liked it. Havent been explore anywhere else in Sunshine Coast. Will keep in mind all the suburbs mentioned for us to se in April.

Worlds apart and much more built up but again with some lovely areas is Caloundra. Caloundra IMO is more like Recliffe, more shops, eaterys and overall choice.

I agree with you Cal, Caloundra is a bigger place, with a good high st, covering most shops and a variety of cafes. There is a cinema, library, and a very good entertainment centre, we have seen such a variety of many excellent shows there, from the 10 tenors, country music, musicals and going to the International Ballet Gala next week, featuring ballet dancers from all over the world, including the Principle ballet dancer from the Royal Ballet, so privileged as it’s only on in Brisbane and Caloundra.

We did a Xmas in Noosa once....loved it.  Homemade Xmas lunch on a big balcony, crisp white wine and a koala in the tree right by us.   But to live there....not a chance, you can hardly get past the roundabout in a car.

I'm working with a bloke in Canberra from the SC, they built early around Kawana Waters and he worked on the new hospital...the plan was to stay, retire, look after the grandkids.   They've now left it because of the traffic up there, he said it was worse than anywhere he's lived !  Whole lot of them decamped south, wife, children, grandchildren.

The schools probably won’t give you tours until you’ve got an address - if they spent every day showing people round who never get to live in their area they’d waste a lot of time! But don’t sweat the schools, honestly. Unless your kids are 16/17 in which case I would say don’t move until they’ve finished HSC. If they’re younger than that, the schools will fall into place - they tend to reflect the neighbourhood so if you’ve trawled the neighbourhood (sit in a local cafe for a couple of days, walk around the streets and get the vibe) and you think you couldn’t live there, then you probably don’t  want to send your kids to the local school (hang around the school gates at going home time, maybe chat to the odd parent and see what they say!)

Sorry had to laugh, of course the traffic is busy at times, especially in holiday spots, that’s no different to any popular holiday destination, and if there is an accident on the Bruce Highway,  but seriously where has he lived? if that’s the worst he has experienced. We drove to the Apollonien Hotel Boreen Point, great country pub, yesterday from Buderim area on  The Sunshine Coast motorway via Noosa Civic, then back via Pomona and the Bruce Highway, No problem with traffic anywhere.

He's from Queensland, I think he's from Brisbane originally but was in the armed forces so travelled.

Apologies for piggy backing on the same thread...but I to am moving to the Sunshine Coast and wondered if I could get a local perspective on a few suburbs as well?  I dont want to rent - but literally pick the right suburb firs time.  I know what im looking fo. Basically, I would like to have a suburb with a fewfacilities  around me or near by,  - be no more than 20 minutes from the beach and definitely have a village/community feel - preferable an actual village centre.  I do not want to live on a new housing development without anything (been there and done that). Ive been looking a Buderim , Mountain Creek area. Ill have 3 teenagers - 2 of which will need to go to State school - but I also want them to be able to access local facilities and be independent.  Any advice greatly appreciated.

Prefer Buderim, Mountain Creek, Sippy Downs,  Brightwater is a newer suburb. I haven’t any school children, by hearsay both Mountain Creek & Sippy Downs schools have a good name both Primary & Senior schools, Buderim Primary school only. University at Sippy Downs.

Hopefully someone with children will reply, but there are plenty of sports facilities here, limited bus service? Mooloolaba is between 8-15 minutes away.

.Buderim has a high st, shops and cafes, Mountain Creek has a small shopping square with all the shops you need plus a cafe, and Palmwoods which is a bit further out has a a small centre but worth a look ? but further from the sea and I don’t know what schools are there. there is a sense of community locally here but I’m not sure you will find it  like a UK village. 

Dr’s everywhere. Hospital at Kawana. Children seem to find enough to enjoy themselves here.

You really need to visit to get a feel of the different suburbs. Buderim housing is I think the most expensive, Mountain Creek mostly more expensive than Sippy Downs, think Brightwater is more expensive? House prices are rising fast, and don’t stay on the market long at the moment.

Thanks for the insight.  I have been to Buderim which is very nice and but out of of my price range on the top of the hill.  

Do you think it would be better to be down the bottom of the hill from Buderim ror in Buderim region itself  like suburbs you have suggested.

It’s personal choice, we were retired when we moved here, so had different needs to you. Visit when you can, and stay for a few days if possible. We bought in Mountain Creek, and it suits us as nowhere is too far,  but  house prices are rising fast, especially if in a good school catchment area. The shopping square is small, but almost every shop is there, plus Dr, Dentist, Physiotherapist etc. you get to know people in them, and tend to see people you know. Some people love Buderim, I hardly go there, it can get very congested. Sippy Downs has plenty of shops, but I don’t know about the community spirit. I think if you have school age children anywhere that’s the best way to get involved and meet people.

Appreciated. Can I ask are there any suburbs best avoided.?  I'm considering Sippy Downs, Mountain Creek ,Little Mountain but Im open to all options in my price range. I would really like a green and leafy suburb rather than a brand new development  and something  with 5/10  mins drive to beach. Preferably would like to be close enough to cycle.

  Any insight would be most appreciated. Thanks
