I don't think Australian cities vary very much. I think British ones probably more so. Nothing being as diverse as London. We have lived in 3 properties in 13 years in the Brisbane area and generally found that Australians are not very neighbourly. As I try to be friendly and helpful to neighbours, I always introduce myself and make conversation. This is how I found out the neigbours were Qlders. I think the main issue is that they are Gen Y Qlders and therefore do what they want, when they want with no regard to others. We used to have older Qlder neighbours who were lovely and the rest of the cul-de-sac was British, NZ, South African. They were all lovely but now most have moved on and have been replaced by very unfriendly Aussies. We used to have street functions but now the Gen Y only socialise with each other and the two older families (Boomer/Gen X) are excluded but have to put up with the noise and Gen Y's ill-disciplined, high pitched squealing kids. I know exactly what you mean. I must be getting really old and grumpy but I certainly don't remember my two sons screaming and squealing the way some children seem to do all the time nowadays. There is a house in our street - thankfully far away from us - where the children make one helluva racket. They often have their friends over and they have two trampolines set up. Are they content to just jump up and down and do a few somersaults? No. The screaming and squealing would drive me bonkers if I had to live next door to them. They often fly up and down the street on their scooters ................ always shouting and screaming of course. I really enjoy the sound of happy children laughing and chattering but can't stand the squealing. We live down the quiet end of the street - a lot of old fogeys like me down this end. rammygirl Posted October 31, 2021 Share Posted October 31, 2021 With us it was the neighbours cockerel. To be fair it was there (or it’s previous incarnations) before we built our house. Thankfully they don’t breed hens anymore so no need for noisy boots! Just clucking hens. Although I still hear one from afar along with cows and sheep, possums,koalas, cockatoos etc………..pretty noisy without any kids!
