Perth's inner west

As others have said, moving from Sydney to Perth will mean slowing down and readjusting - you won't be able to replicate the same lifestyle. Perth is more of a big town than a city, with lots of space and fresh air, parks, endless beaches and outdoor spaces. As with many places, the thing thats good about it is also the thing thats bad about it. Its laid back and peaceful, you'll always get plenty of space at the beach or in the park and it can be a very relaxing place to exist. But given it is so laid back and peaceful, the times you crave a big city buzz it can be frustrating as you have to know where to go and when to go there. It's getting better in that regard....

This is it, in a nutshell.   Both Sydney and Perth are great places to live, but the lifestyle is totally different.  It's not a case of one's good and the other's bad, it just depends what you're looking for.

I could never live in Perth, but @Paul1Perth will never be able to understand why I feel the "vibe" is absent.  You can have pubs and cafes and still not have that "vibe".   Equally, he would probably be mystified why I prefer the inner suburbs of Melbourne over his beaches.

There has been changes. Some improvement and some lost opportunity as well in the sense of really getting the city to rock. There's a good buzz I found around the xmas lights spread around the city during that time of year. Still somewhat restrained outside of late night opening on Fridays though. At least for a capital city. The new square by the bus station leading to Northbridge, is losing money with regards the eateries. Leederville is only just recovering from excessive cafe/shop/eateries closures. Subi and Fremantle experienced similar.

I think they missed a chance with that new square, Yagan Square isn't it?

They could do with a couple of decent pubs there, always seems like a place you just walk through. Short walk to Northbridge or to other pubs and bars near the river though. Always like the vibe in the Aviary, above the main train station. Nice rooftop bar, great in summer.

I suspect Paul understands what is meant, but other factors are more important to him. You are quite correct in your comment with regards to having pubs and cafes but still being unable to decipher much of a vibe. A city is the people that make it and their world views and interests and things that make them and in turn the city interesting.

Perth build around the resource industry not the 'enlightenment' and helped show case cities like Paris and so on. It's a money making city, casino somewhat like economy, of up's and down's. Greed pretty much the main game in town and my believe is a lot, take themselves far more seriously than given credit for.

They did indeed. It should have been the catalyst in not just connecting The City with Northbridge but a place of creativity and safe place to wine and dine and do a host of other things. Just a walk through at the moment, with too often a number of less than desirables being a nuisance and numerous occasions have witnessed suspected drug deals by the bus station.

Been to The Aviary and always take visitors there. Can be very full at times but one of the choice locations I agree. QE Quay a bit underwhelming as well. Pleasant but not to be compared with Federation Square as it stands.

We like the Aviary. The Island at Elizabeth Quay is THE most perfect spot for a Sunday session, as is the rooftop bar at Reveley.

Frequent The Island  some regularity . Great place for a drink. Sometimes hard to get seating outside. As for The Reveley while great views and again great for a drink, I find the food ordinary for the price. Would probably dine at The Island out of the two by choice. Completely given up on The Lucky Shag and old time haunt since the changes. But like the cosmopolitan vibe at QE.

I do too. It’s our go to for a girly afternoon pub crawl.  We sometimes get the ferry across to South Perth and do the Windsor for one. Nice atmosphere but no views. Agree not always easy to snag perfect outdoor spot at the Island but once you do it’s just perfection.. Menu a bit limited but nice food all the same and cocktails not bad. The tap beers are a bit meh considering it’s meant to be a brewery?

We went to Mandoon brewery in the valley today, impressed by the ales, they seem to have upped their game lately. Hadn’t been for a few years.

Lucky Shag is just ‘ok’.

Yagan square has so much potential but lacks the foot traffic at the moment (which is odd for such a central location). The new University campus that’s being built will hopefully change that. It’ll occupy the empty space next to the bus port on both sides (incorporating the bus port entrance into the University building). That will finally join northbridge to the city and hopefully students with money to spend will bring more of an inner city buzz to the area, busy at all times of day and night (I hope).

A lot is being placed on the ability of the university to turn fortunes around in the centre. It will obviously impact on foot traffic and numbers but more needs to be done than seeking a salvation of sorts through students . Over emphasis on students in other cities around the globe  tend to create an over focus on a particular group which doesn't necessary reflect broader interests. Still it's a start to create  a greater vibrancy than presently exists.

Fremantle is looking very run down at the moment

It's been that way for some time. Really noticeable though through the demise of international tourists and back packers. I thought often beginning to resemble a fading, UK seaside town , with ever increasing numbers of people who for all appearances have fallen through the gap and display numerous issues. Some improvement of late with police attempting to get rid of the meth abusers (bad during mask wearing days ) On two recent day visits more 'normalcy' visible at street , although issues still clearly visible. Best probably down by the fishing harbour. South Terrace I find a shade of its former glory in the late nineties .

So much potential in that area....definitely in need of investment.

Freo spruced itself up prior to the 86 America's Cup. I was there shortly after the event, the following year. There had been considerable changes from the old rough and tumble place of an earlier year. Those days very easy to get into a punch up or abused from passing cars , witnessed the biggest bar room brawl ever seen there.  (Cleo's anyone in the know from the time)so the difference was profound even if a degree of roughness remained around the fringe.

It took a major international event, to bring change. Not sure what can be done to improve life there. I had hoped more apartments would bring more a cosmopolitan  and 24 hour vibe, but hardly the case. Not sure the type of investment that would move things along most likely be.
