How do you pronounce castle ?

I am used to the the Australian pronunciation. Yoghurt, Vitamins, Privacy etc sound funny to me pronounced your way now.

Carstle.  I’d certainly sound funny to you then.

Which Australian pronunciation?  In some parts of the country it's cassel, in others carssel.   I've always used the latter.

Do you have any of your English accent left @Parley? Assume after all this time you sound Australian?

Not much English accent left if any. But I was from south of England so i don't think a very prominent accent to start with.

I think if you have a distinct accent from up north or Scotland you would never lose it.

Me too. It is not consistent. For bank branch i say it the same way and France, but some use the hard a.

You are right. I know someone who has a strong northern accent that has lived in Australia for over 20 years.  You would never know,  nothing they say sounds Australian at all and that English northern accent is still very much there.

So you refuse to go into any pub in Britain unless it was built before 1788?

Most of the pubs I loved going to in England were built In the 20th century.

And you regard history post 1788 as being irrelevant and uninteresting?

History did not end in 1788

Didn't you say that "history" separates British pubs from Aussie pubs?

I simply deduced that as Aussie pubs started post 1788 then presumably the same rule applies to British pubs. Before 1788 they fit your maxim that history separates British pubs from Aussie pubs.

After 1788, no history.

Noticed many interviewees on TV in Australia start their replies with "Look..."  Always thought it was impolite to start a reply with that in the UK, unless chastising a child.

It’s a sovereign country, so what they do/say in the U.K is irrelevant.
