We really want to be moving to be closer to our friends ( chosen family) and have no idea where to start. We do have folk that have moved so i asked them where to start and the advice i got was a link to this site and a site that looks at what skill shortages Australia has. So i think i have had a good start. I've been googling for months and getting nowhere closer to knowing what to do. The visa information is a minefield of its own. Currently i work in a school for kids with autism and im getting my qualifications in social care so i have an idea of what i want o do when we do make the move. But whats the first thing we should do to actually start the process of moving and typicly how long does it take to finally make the move? i don't want to start the process to early or late. Richard The very first thing you need to do is look to see if your occupation is on the skills list as if it’s not that is the end of the idea. Are you a teacher for example or do you just work in a school. Do you have a degree? The best thing you can do is have a consultation with one of the excellent migrant agents who regularly post on this forum. They will be able to give you an honest answer as to whether you stand a chance or not and give you help with the next steps. You may want to put this under one of the visa headings as many won’t look under the heading it’s in unless they have an interest in that area. Best of luck. . Even if your job is on the list, that doesn't mean you will make it. It's a competitive process, like applying for a job - thousands apply but only a few are chosen. You don't get a refund of the fees if you don't get chosen. If you don't stand a good chance of being chosen, it's a lot of money to throw away. So the best plan is to have a consultation with a good migration agent, who can give you a fairly accurate idea of what your chances are. Try Suncoast Migration or Pinoy Australia or Go Matilda. I specialise in working with people who have autism but i cant see anything like that on the list. Family support worker is the closest job i think. I will give it a harder think through. Quoll Posted October 26, 2020 Share Posted October 26, 2020 Working with kids with autism is going to be pretty specialised and generally you’ll need to be a teacher with a degree. Otherwise you would need to be a psychologist with a Masters. Or I suppose you could be a registered social worker or a nurse - in general, the positions working with kids with special needs (apart from STAs which are lowly paid) are those with registration with some board or other. Have you checked the requirements for the skills assessment? http://www.acwa.org.au/migration-assessment/guidelines-family-support-worker for most occupations only post qualification experience is counted, so if you haven't yet got the qualifications, you would need to factor in getting the required length of experience after you qualify.
