We have finally arrived in Perth

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

We finally arrived on 15th September,  singapore flights from London Heathrow.   We was very lucky with our flights that they didn't get cancelled, we was quite anxious just waiting but turned out all good.

The flights were practically 3/4 empty, had a row each so we could lay down and sleep.  Food was very good too. Heathrow and Singapore airports were like ghost towns, so strange to witness it all.

Arriving at Perth airport,  we were ushered away from the international arrivals area to a quick customs check then collect our luggage on the carousel.   There was a row of desks each with a police officer who we sat down with and they filled out forms.  We was then escorted to buses waiting on the tarmac, once on, the police escorted each bus enroute to our hotel in Perth, The Novotel.  Lovely large suite with a kitchen, more like an apartment, 10th floor, views of the swan river.  2 tv's etc....food is ok but not great when 2 very fussy eaters!! Each day a paper bag with your food in is left outside your door and they knock.   It's great not having to cook, clean and do washing!!  You have to really make the time as best as you can to stop boredom, its really quiet, no windows can be opened, no leaving the room.  We try not to think about how many days are ahead, just take one day at a time.

I have applied for a job on Seek and sorted out my resume, husband will do his soon, plenty of time to do things like that.  We've got puzzle and sudoku books, out tablets/iPads etc...plus we can watch a film instead of the news, which is on all day and evening!!

You get a call from reception to check you haven't gone mad and they ask if you are ok and need anything.  I have made a few calls from our room and as long as local, are 90c per minute.

We had our first covid swab test today, they will only contact you if positive,  so no news is good news.  We then have another one on the 11th day. It doesn't hurt and is not even uncomfortable.

We have been looking at cars online, ready for when we leave the hotel, so we can go out and sort our licenses out, medicare card, register with a gp etc.....

Sadly we cannot purchase a house now as the sale of ours in the UK failed to complete after exchange, so has been a very stressful time and will now have to put back on the market, something we thought would never happen!!! Our container arrives around mid October to Fremantle and will go into storage, something else we didn't want to happen.

So, glad to be here for sure, but not being able to go out and find our dream home bas taken away the excitement.  There is nothing we can do now but sit and wait for another buyer, just hope it's quick as dont want to sell an empty house approaching winter as it could get damp, which could have an effect on someone buying it cheaper, we would then lose out.  We are devastated this has all happened.

Still, taking each day as it comes.

Good luck to those who are making the move to Australia soon.

Xxx

"Registering" with a GP is not a thing in Australia.  You can visit any GP you like (providing he/she is accepting new patients:  if a practice is super busy they may restrict to existing patients).

Ah yes I forgot about that, will have to find one through recommendations.

Well done and use this time to do what you can online. You must be itching to get out. Don't worry because Perth is going nowhere and weather warming up each week. Enjoy the rest and getting rid of the jetlag. You'll be good to go on D day. Welcome to Perth!

So glad to hear you have arrived safely.  That sucks about the house.  Certainly where we are agents are telling me there is a fair bit of demand at the moment with the stamp duty holiday, so hopefully you can get back on the market and under offer quickly!

If you need a hire car when you are out, I highly recommend Bayswater car hire who are on Adelaide terrace - not far whichever Novotel you are in.

https://www.bayswatercarrental.com.au/perth/car-hire?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gmb-perth-adelaide-tce

They have a very limited range and hence are very well priced.  We have used them multiple times for 1-3 weeks hire.

If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place...

If you get a chance, take it, If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said it would be easy they just said it would be worth it...

It's still a buyers market (I think) in Perth so bargain hard. Where will you look?

Congratulations on getting back - the perfect time of year to be returning to Australia too! 🙂

You may have also forgotten that over here some GPs charge and others 'bulk bill', so you don't have to pay anything. I've been to both and there seems to be no difference in the quality of service received, so I always try to go to the latter (although sometimes you do have to wait longer to visit a GP that bulk bills).

That's great news too. Our house sale is going through and will hopefully complete on the 1st October - fingers crossed! We have already committed to 6 months in rented though, and given the current exchange rate I think we'll hang on for a few months before committing ourselves. The economic outlook currently isn't good which means there may well be a slump in the property market. Housing here is way overpriced (exorbitant in some areas) - all fuelled on the back of cheap money of course!

Hi Aussiebird so glad you have managed to make it to Oz and great news that the house has sold.  Quarantine starts slow but it speeds up when you realise how much planning there is to do for freedom day!  We ended up in Sydney after our flights to Melbourne were cancelled at the last minute (after we’d checked in!!!) and did quarantine there before travelling interstate to Tas where we had to self isolate for another fortnight.  At least you’ve only got to do it once!

Put your feet up and binge on Netflix.  You deserve it xxxx

What is the appeal about Perth to Poms? My understanding is that there is a huge cohort of English in Perth, but I can't understand why the area is such a magnet for them specifically. Is it the assumed perception that the weather is 'perfect' in Perth, above all else? Can anyone explain this?

Just curious.
