I'll see how I get on as it will be strange working some where else as I left school and stayed with the same company for 22yrs.

Everyone is doing well so far, still in holiday mode so we will see how everyone is when we settle into real life. School visit today for my eldest but she even said that's she is ready to go back to school . My wife can start getting her netball sorted out now that we know where we are living, so she will be happy with that.

Wow, you've done so well Lavers, it's like an episode of 'wanted down under' how positively it's gone! I had a rather longer road to where you are, so great work - particularly under current circumstances

I rang the estate agent for one advertised but it had just gone, but she also had the 1 next door which she hadn't put on the market yet, which she gave us first pick on. We have just been to school and my daughter loves it so she is going in tomorrow for a few hours then starting monday. I would like to be on a little more an hour in my job, but we can pay the bills and have money left to go out at weekends so that's the main thing. This is also of 1 wage so when my wife starts work we are laughing.

First job I found wasn't paid too well either - about 1.5x in $ than in GBP, but that changed with time (and that thing they love here of local experience!). At 2x plus things get a lot easier I'd say - Just avoid doing the currency conversion too much when shopping as you'll only remember those that are much higher here! Glad your daughter is happy with the school, sounds good.

Cheers mate, yeah I'm a fabricator/welder/boilermaker although I've been off the tools for 5 or 6 years. We sold our house the week before the UK went into lockdown so was lucky and also that made us come to Aus when we did. Ausvisitor
Put our house on the market on Friday, offer today 2% below asking price and wanting it wrapped up before Christmas. Looks like we will be partaking of Aussie Quaratine hospitality soon as well 3
Wanderer Returns
That's great news. We'd gladly take a 2% drop to sell our place!I'd wait until you've exchanged contracts before booking flights, if you have that flexibility. Should it fall through, having to organize anything to do with a house sale from overseas can be a bit of a nightmare. Is that still true? In this day and age, where email signatures are valid in a court of law, I'd have thought it would be a lot easier than it used to be - surely everything can be done electronically? Wait till spring and summer, you'll like it even more, weathers pretty crap at the moment. If you're all into sport you've come to the right place. Great to hear about the job. I was out of work for 5 months when we came in 92. I was applying for all sorts. Went back on the tools, as you say, in a predictive maintenance role, mostly on gold mines. Hated it, not because of the work which was interesting, but there was only the guy that owned the company and me. He was the most boring person I'd ever met. We worked from his house office in the basement for a long time. Thought it was maybe me he didn't like as he hardly spoke. He was loaded, owned 4 houses in Kings Park Rd, a lovely area of Perth. He invited me and the wife to a New Years Eve party at his place. They had views from their back garden over Kings Park, City and river. Lots of his family and friends there. We didn't know anyone apart from his wife, who was really nice. We sat with some people on a big table and got chatting. There was no sign of the boss and when his wife came by with more champagne one of people at the table, who turned out to be his cousin, asked where he was. He'd gone down to Albany to do a job for Kailis fisheries. When the wife went the guy who'd asked turned to the table and said oh well, no-one will miss that boring bastard to which everyone at the table laughed. I had spent 6 months thinking it was me he didn't like and I was getting really down about even going to work, because of the atmosphere. I made up my mind I would start looking for something else. I think, as new migrants, we have a tendency to feel so grateful to have a job that I stuck at somewhere I hated being that I would have quit after a month in the UK. When I got the next job, where I ended up working for 27 years till I retired last Christmas. I realised how much I'd missed working in a good office environment where a lot of other people worked to have a laugh with. I don't think I'd like working from home the whole time. Part of work is socialising and being able to have a laugh whilst doing a good job too of course. If you end up in a job you don't like don't think you have to stay there out of gratitude. You might be just fine where you are which will be great. I was lucky with the job I had long term as I got to see a lot of Australia and some good international trips on company money. Our head office in Aus was Garden Island in Sydney. I love Sydney when someone else is picking up the bill. There are some brilliant places in Aus and so different. Some of the places I've really enjoyed are quite small. Cairns, Darwin, Townsville. Liked Brisbane a lot too, not keen on Melbourne and didn't like Canberra one bit. Only been to Adelaide a couple of times on short visits so didn't see a lot of it. Me and the wife went to Port Douglas on holiday a few years back. Went to the Great Barrier Reef, loved Port Douglas and had a great time. So many places in Aus yet to visit. Loads of friends tell us Ningaloo and areas around there are brilliant. We've not been yet but mean to. Might be our only option if this virus hangs around.
