Little Britain banned from streaming services

Recommended Posts

Little Britain has been banned and removed from streaming platforms due to its racist content.

Blackface characters and others like the bigoted woman played by David Walliams who would throw up when seeing a young black girl are deemed no longer appropriate in 2020.

Do you agree Little Britain should be banned ?

I thought the whole idea was to make fun of racists? That is how I took it anyway. We have no right to condemn places like China with their censorship because we are the same and worse really.

With the present sensitivity around race issues and the strong feeling of discrimination amongst a sector of society is it right to use racial stereotyping as an element of a 'comedy' routine.

Might it not just be interpreted as gratuitously offensive.

There is a real issue about where 'freedom of speech' becomes offensive and not a real debate about the subject

As we are seeing played out in the US with Trumps tweets, words and actions have consequences.

One of my beefs at the moment is about the censorship of anything sexual in the media but we are inundated with extremely violent movies and TV series portraying dismemberment and torture but their is no discussion of that whilst the removal of a programme that is offensive to some becomes a major discussion point about 'censorship.

Don't we need to keep a bit of balance.

I'm not entirely comfortable with the way this is going. And I'm not exactly sure of who is driving it.

It's almost like we are heading towards a cultural apartheid.

I do wonder whether we are losing sight of what is important, that we should try and stop black people dying at the hands of the police disproportionately.

Not sure about heading to cultural apartheid, I think we reached that point some time ago. Very dangerous especially when you are not allowed to ridicule racism as they were doing. What about the fat woman they make fun of ? Is that allowed ? What about the old lady who wees everywhere? Personally I think that is worse because it is cruel.

This is becoming a thing now.

Netflix has remove Chris Lilley's comedies as well as old movies like Gone With the Wind.

Never was my cup of tea, didn't find it funny. What people find funny in mrs Browns boys I can't fathom either, but it's popular?

What's happening now though with this banning of old films and comedy is just crazy overreaction. I've seen a couple of stand up comedy shows and it seems fine now for gays and lesbians to take the stage, swear every other word and slag off whatever government or politician they don't like. That seems to be where standup and comedy is heading.

Wonder if they are going to ban the videos that the black rappers put out. Talk about caricatures of black people. They have to be the worst.

I've just heard that lego are withdrawing the policeman from their sets. This is going way too far. Sounds like Seattle police have thrown in the towel and allowed "activists" to take over most of the city.

It's anarchy, the crazies have won and it's spreading.😟

I think that racism needs to be challenged and attitudes do change over time, which can lead to once popular comedy being left behind. But I do think comedy can be very effective in holding a mirror up to society and challenging our views.

I once went to see Jimmy Carr in Glasgow and as you can imagine, nothing was sacred. He joked about sexuality, religion, disability, race. Some of it I found funny, some of it distasteful, but that was the point he was making.

When the crowd drew a breath of shock at a joke, he stopped and questioned the audience, asking why they found it ok to laugh about race and sex crimes but not religion etc. Asking what it was that made other offensive jokes ok but not that particular joke.

He was holding up a mirror, pointing out that we may all have racist, sexist etc tendencies we hadn't realised, that we may not be as righteous as we think we are, and exploring that internal dialogue. At least that's what I like to think he was doing.

I do think there is a concerning direction of travel here, whereby we must all have the same views and opinions. A shift away from challenging extremist views (as we should) towards challenging wrongthink. Trending away from physical/actual crime to thought crime.

For example the Scottish Government is drafting legislation at the moment which (very crudely) summarised means that if you offend someone, even if you did not intend to, you can be charged with a maximum custodial sentence of 10 years.

I find this a very worrying prospect indeed

Free speech is very important, even if what you say upsets someone there will be others that agree with your point of view and this used to lead to debates about controversial subjects.

These days the bullying tactics of certain groups, that can be organised by social media to have hundreds turn up, have stopped certain people from being heard. Universities used to thrive on having controversial people present their views. I remember Diego Maradona being invited to Cambridge (i think) uni after his hand of god episode and the Falklands war.

Maybe a bad example but when people like John Cleese have given up on University talks because they have protesters, usually violent, confrontational ones turn up and shout them down, just because they don't like what he's saying, it's gone too far.

I said to my son last night that there is a formula now to most TV shows. A couple of powerful women in powerful jobs who don't get on with each other, throw in at least one gay character and a gay love scene, mix up the races of actors so no-one can say it's not multi cultural enough, guys never as clever or talented as the women. He said you should follow that with "not that there's anything wrong with that"😂

He works on rigs offshore and even in that male dominated atmosphere he said that phrase is used after every joke and dodgy comment. The phrase itself has become the joke.

The problem with all this BLM malarkey is they and their lefty puppet masters go after the whole white race. Listen to them, it's all "white people this" "white people that".  A white person would never get away with that.

From LEGO

Quote

As we’ve been saying since the protests started, we stand with the black community against racism and inequality. Our mission is to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow and that includes inspiring them to be tolerant, inclusive, and kind. Yesterday, we announced a US $4 million donation to organizations in the United States dedicated to non-profits that support black children and others that educate all children and families about tolerance and racial equality.

There are incorrect reports saying we’ve removed some LEGO sets from sale. To be clear, that is not the case and those reports are false. Our intention was to temporarily pause digital advertising in response to events in the US. These sets were available last week and will always be available to our fans.

Generations of children have loved playing with the our LEGO Police and Firefighter sets which can often be found in our LEGO CITY line and is a constant in our collection. Given the tragic events in the US over the past 10 days, we paused digital marketing of sets with content that could be perceived insensitive if promoted during this time.

Ant and Dec have now followed suit......

Little Britain was funny in parts.....I liked Vicky Pollard and Lou and Andy personally......bitty.....was also good.....its another victory for social media......those that make the most noise get heard more.....young people air their views and these celebs are terrified of losing their audience......livelihoods and fame.....I think like pulling down statues of the past it should be put to the public to decide.....local councils could sort out the statues with local voting and maybe ask the public if they are offended by these characters.....the results might be surprising......remember Brexit when the left tried to hijack that vote using every thing at their disposal to get it overturned.....it eventually went back to the public and JC extreme left wing socialist government was humiliated by a large number of his own supporters......

These people are even now starting to pick apart how we speak.....its crazy with words like "thug" now being used as examples of racism......just fking mad......there is still some fight in us tho with the term "White saviour" now circulating.....

The pic on the left is a gay white man playing a black woman - the pic on the right is two black men playing white chicks. Only one of these is offensive (apparently) 20200611_183008.jpeg

That's the problem right there. Makes people pick sides when one bunch goes too far there's always going to be a reaction.

White Saviour is not something I would be leaning towards. There's plenty of even headed people around that don't get caught up in the anarchy and just think All lives matter and people should just get on with each other.
