Born in china - no communication from china as it spread within parts of  china , now it is worldwide .
Mostly in the tourist areas of europe - milan - rome - venice - madrid - barcelona , and of course New York in the united states
China is now locking the world out , and getting back to work .
Beijing and other large cities have been largely protected from the virus .
All this , after the democracy  riots in hong kong , and trump nailing the chinese over trade .
It makes you wonder .

Sorry but that’s just beyond conspiracy theory paranoia and lunacy. It’s a whole other level of far fetched.

With most of the world in lockdown, worried for their jobs or already having lost their jobs, who is going to buy all the goods they manufacture?

The majority of the world will not be buying, new appliances, new homes, clothes, cars, electronics or related manufacturing parts in supply chains, in the short term.

So all this Chinese manufacture post their Covid-19 outbreak is going to supply demand where? Nowhere, near like before. Its not like billions of chinese who couldn’t afford it before are suddenly going to now, either.

In less than a month economies are getting to levels, in terms of spending akin to years of world war. That will bot support Chinese strategy for a secure economy in the longterm never mind the short term. Given they’ve economy over 30+ years, they aren’t going to be that cavalier about ruining it. In fact, its down right stupid. school boy kindergarten stuff. Given their long term well thought out (as in considered) string of pearls strategy in Asia and support in Africa over a decade or so. So totally out of character.

If you want a conspiracy, it suits more of a half baked, short termist, to hell with the collateral damage, Western knee jerk plan, a bit like Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam etc. Release a deadly virus in China because they are getting too big for their boots.

Personally i think it’s just nature, doing what it does best, reminding everyone who’s in charge.

Agree with all of those thoughts and analysis, but, as much as it pains me, PB has a point about the so called wet markets given that Aids and Ebola are reckoned to have jumped species due to consumption of 'bush meat' so the Chinese Authorities have to take action to stamp this trade out, although you could argue that it is better out in the open where it can be regulated than hidden away in secret under the counter shops.

I am not sure its that simple.  Recipient economies, especially Australia in terms of its Free Trade Agreeement with China will undoubtedly re-think that relationship. There is already groundswell of an anti-chinese sentiment, There is no conspiracy. COVID-19 emerged out of the laboratories of Wuhan and the Chinese government has never stepped up and taken responsibility.

That is not a trading partner that anyone would want.

That seems to be the conspiracy theory of choice at the moment on the web.

All those Russian bots are having a field day sowing discord across the world taking out their biggest opponents, China and the US at a stroke.

Blame China and get idiot Chump re elected.

And Russians didn't meddle in the US and UK elections??!!!

Don’t have a problem with that at all. As far as Im concerned, its still nature (sadly) flexing her muscles.

i don’t think its that simple, but Im not getting dragged into unsubstantiated, dar fetched conspiracies.

The world will surely change after this, is over, but i’m not expecting it to be in the way, you might imagine/wish.

Is every opinion that counters your opinion, a conspiracy theory? Perhaps its just the Guardian telling you how to think.

Russian and China are not one another's enemy. They are allies of each other and enemies of the US.

Just heard that several Chinese companies in Aus, one of them a realestate company in Sydney, were ordered by the Chinese government to send out their employees and buy up masks, disinfectant, hand sanitiser etc and get it sent back to China. This was back in end Jan and early Feb, before we'd twigged there was a problem.

The government has clamped down on the practice now but way too late.

Tons of stuff was shipped before anyone realised what was happening.

Apparently they shipped 100 tons of supplies back in February ( A Chinese state owned company) Pauline Hanson has been quite vocal on stopping any foreign purchases of businesses or assets and it seems government have listened.

The UK and other countries afflicted by the virus are out there on the international market now buying up PPE supplies, testing supplies and ventilators, all trying I guess to outbid each other, China is I think providing PPE to the west and is providing their knowledge of the virus to the medicos of the west so it might be prudent to balance that against China’s actions in the midst of an epidemic, which they have actually got on top of subsequently

China bought over 2 million masks from Australia by telling their state owned company employees to go out and source them and ship them back to China via their own state owned freight company back in jan / feb leaving Australia with no stock or supplies, they have known how bad this would get and told the world nothing.

They are misleading the world again as they are not including people who test positive if no symptoms are shown , they haven’t got on top of it at all.

Maybe now is the time for GB and Australia and other countries to restart their manufacturing industries again.

Hmmmmmm

Tell that to JLR, Aston Martin, Nissan, Toyota, Amazon, Vax, Ford, BMW, VW, et al oh and I forgot the govt just sold "BRITISH STEEL " to a Chinese company.

So good luck with that bit of nationalism

Our govt sold our last national steel industry just last month, it specialises in steel rail production, China will clean up big on HS2 now rather than the govt nationalising it as Labour proposed, but then ideology gets in the way of doing the right thing all the time as I think we are seeing in the present fiasco, both here and in Australia/USA.

the car industry is finished as we know it, electric cars will not need chinese parts so much, they can and will be sourced elsewhere,  SO STEEL IS GOING TO CONTINUE  BEING MADE IN THE UK  AND NOT CHINA, THATS GOOD

These posts were split from the Coronavirus thread.

If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.

You do realise don't you that the profits will be enjoyed by the Chinese state in China and the Chinese state will control the price of the steel we buy and can hold our industry to ransom, as it has done across the world by flooding the world with cheap steel, they have promised an arc furnace to use scrap steel which will allow them to produce even cheaper steel.

China will ensure that they have a big stake in producing the basic parts for everything in the future as in the past, because they work on the basis of a small profit on mega production of huge numbers of the same item, the old ' pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap' principal and they have been hugely foresighted by capturing monopolistic control of fundamental resources worldwide.
