UK to Oz - Construction industry differences - Construction Project Manager

Hi All,

We've had our 190 EOI approved and been invited to submit a visa application for NSW so things are starting to become a bit more real, whoop!

As a client side Senior Project Manager in construction I'm now starting to think about looking at jobs and preparing for a career in Oz - most likely in the Sydney.

Are there any PMs out there that have made the move and can provide any guidance on making the transition

Likewise can anyone in the construction industry provide any input on any differences/challenges of making the move?

Hi Keith

It really depends on what you have done in the UK. Its an Industry of who you know not what you know, and any non Aussies usually struggle in the first few years to find their feet. There is a resistance as you you do not understand the BCA/NCC Codes, the construction techniques are different, WHS/Environmental issues - you are basically retraining.

COVID has made a big impact on Residential so their will be a glut of Construction Pros' in the market and they all have contacts who will give help give them a leg up or Chop Out as they say here.

I've been trawling the internet for and not having much luck in the way of answers. Perhaps you could assist as your post is pretty recent and relating to my husband's skills. 

My husband qualified last year with NVQ6 in Construction Project Management. He has 5 years total project management experience. With another 3 years site management experience. 

From your post, I would assume you are on an NVQ7? 

If so, did you have to have this converted via Vetassess to AUS equivalent? Are you a member of CIOB? We're only at the beginning stages of applying for visas so this is all very much a minefield and not sure where to start. 

Would appreciate any advice, suggestions answers. Thanks.
