Recommended suburbs in South East Melbourne

I have recently moved to Melbourne from the UK with my 12yr old son. I am working in North Laverton and am currently staying in Mordialloc with family. I’d like to move closer to work but remain in striking distance of family for support. Can anyone recommend good areas? My key criteria are commute time (~45mins is the aim), access to good high schools, proximity to sports facilities, family-oriented neighbourhood. I’m likely looking at an apartment but a house is also ok as long as it’s within my budget which is circa $500 a week. Any and all advice greatly received!

Hi @GinaG83 welcome to the forum.  So are you looking at moving South of Mordialloc (SE Melbourne) or closer to work North Laverton (West of Melbourne) I am asking because with the key criteria being commute time under 45 min you are going to struggle. Admittedly it’s probably 10 years now since I did the commute on a daily basis to North Melbourne but I would have thought with all the development since then it would have only got worse.  It’s the Westgate Bridge that is the nightmare. If you are working shifts though then it wouldn’t be to bad. I could do Berwick to North Melbourne in 45 minutes off peak, rush hour it could take 2 hours some days.
Have you thought of looking at some of the inner East suburbs although you are still going to have the traffic and thinking about it you probably wouldn’t save that much and rentals would be higher.
Have a read at some of our suburb guides https://www.pomsinoz.com/articles.html/where-to-live-in-australia/victoria/
