Travel component of PR visa??

Serendipity

Recommended Posts

Hi, can someone point me in the right direction please:

We (me, husband and 2 children) had PR (189) visa's granted in March 2016. We emigrated in October 2016 so have lived here in Australia for nearly 3 years now. We travel to the UK to see family every 18 months approx and this is likely to continue.

What are the implications for us when the travel component of the Visa expires, and when will that happen?

When can we start to apply for Citizenship? Is it 4 years after the grant date of visa??

Friends who are a year or so ahead of us are talking about a high cost involved when re-entering Australia on their PR visa's due to the travel bit having already expired.

Thank you

The travel portion runs out 5 years from grant. So March 2021 for you. After this you will either need an RRV or citizenship (plus Aus passport) to leave and return to Australia. Looks like you will be eligible for citizenship in October 2020 (current rules at least).  I would go for that.

You would most likely get a 5 year RRV if you applied and they can be applied for before your travel portion runs out.

Saying this rules change so it might be different by then.

Yes not cheap as you all need separate RRVs or citizenship and passports. At least the citizenship lasts for life!  Factor in over $1000 just for RRVs

It's 4 years living in Oz, one of which must have been a year of PR. You'll qualify for that in 2020 from the timeline you gave.

The only thing to watch out for is the travel before you apply. You'll more than likely be fine unless you've been going home for a very long time when you've been home. You can't have been outside Australia for more than a combined year in the 4 years, and in the year before you apply, you can't have been outside of Australia for more than 3months total.

"away from Australia for no more than 12 months in total in the past 4 years, including no more than 90 days in total in the past 12 months"
