489 Visa and points

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I have been lucky enough to gain a sponsored job in Victoria. Our aim is to apply for PR as soon as reasonably practical, so i was wondering if somebody could answer the following questions;

1) Can you apply for a PR visa (189/190) at any time, whilst on a TSS?
2) Currently, my minimum points score sits at 70 points if i get a Level 7 IELTS. (I will be aiming for a superior level 8, and will be studying hard for it, but looking at worse case scenario). Will 70 points be enough to apply for PR now and be succesful, or would i be better waiting a year and aiming for Level 8 Superior in IELTS, and gaining an extra 5 points for the year of working in Australia? (Totalling 85 points?) Essentially my question is, does a higher points score bear weight on your application?
3) Does applying whilst on Australian work in your favour? Or are you treated the same as an overseas applicant?

Thanks all in advance 🙂

Nathan

1. Yes

2. Points work differently for 189 compared to 190. On a 189 at the moment, you would need at least 75 points. However, this normally reduces at the start of July. We are sing people with 70 points getting invites for 190 visas. However, you need to check the Victorian state migration page to ensure they are sponsoring your occupation and any special criteria being applied.

I wonder if anyone can provide some guidance -

My relative scored 65 points for subclass 190 and 70 points for subclass 489 on submitting his EoI.   It was submitted in 2017 as 'Advertising Specialist', to date i.e. 17 May he has not received an invitation.  He received an overall band score 8.0 - so

Listening- 8.5

Reading - 7.

Writing 7.0

Speaking 8.5

His EoI expires in August this year, not sure whereto from here

His ILETS score is 7. Not 8.

Well on the document its says that the overall band score = 8.0

Any suggestions what next ..... I guess he will have to wait until July to see if he gets an invitation, or else apply again.  Can anyone provide some advice.

You are correct IELTS give him an overall band of 8. However it's Australian Immigration policy for you to achieve that score in every element of the test, so as writing was a 7 score, for immigration they got a 7.

I know people who have scored 9in everything but writing and despite taking it 4 or 5 times can't get that one element up above 7.5

Most states (especially true of NSW) actively prioritise 190 applicants with a superior English score - so not having this could well be hampering their chances.

Hi, if he filled EOI for 190 or 489, he needs to do further step of applying for State sponsorship to each State (SA, NT, TAS...), as they will not automatically process 190/489 EOI (except for NSW). Please go to each State for their process and criteria (also fee if applicable).

For IELTS, VERYSTORMY meant that the points he get for language is based on "each band" score - i.e he get 10, not 20 - as you only get 20 if each band is 8+.
