up4answers
Hi there I've recently started my own creative business (design), I'm a sole trader here in Australia, a citizen and Australian tax resident. I have just started doing some work for my old company in the UK who have me on a small retainer of £1000 per month for a bunch of hours. Can anyone tell me whether I have to pay tax on this in the UK? Or whether I bring it to Australia myself via transfer and pay tax on it here? Thank you! Alan Collett
Likely to be taxable in Australia as self employment income - the A$ equivalent of the £ amount to be included on your Australian tax returns. Best regards.

If you're doing the work in Australia then it's Australian income not UK income. Your client is in the UK but that just means you are exporting your services to the UK rather than selling to an Australian customer. You don't charge GST (assuming you need to be registered - you may be below the turnover threshold) on export sales.
rammygirl
Oh and it will need to be declared to ATO even if it never leaves the UK

I might have a similar situation on my hands in the future... If the £1,000 p/m were paid into a UK bank account I assume that would need declaring on both UK and Aus tax returns? But it would only be taxed in Australia?

No because the work is being done in Australia. You are not working in the UK.
