Brighton tennis court for sale for $4m

It’s not unusual for a property worth $4 million to come onto the market in Brighton. But what sets 58 Were Street apart from the others is the fact there’s no home there at all.

It is currently a tennis court. The 892-square-metre block of land, with an asking price of between $3.8 million and $4.1 million, came onto the market last week.

 

The tennis court was originally part neighbouring 60 Were Street, which is also up for sale. The owners have separated the two properties to be auctioned at the end of the month.

Auctioneer and partner at Marshall White Bayside Stephen Smith said it was a rare sale in one of Brighton’s most beautiful, tree-lined streets.

Properties on Were Street are very tightly held. In fact, the home and tennis court have only had two owners since the original property was first built in 1919.

“It’s an iconic location,” Mr Smith said. “It’s very rare to have land like this ready to go.”

Mr Smith said the current owners, who have lived at the address for nearly 40 years, are a couple who are looking to downsize. They bought the property in 1982 for $285,000, public records show.

“They’ve raised their family and all the kids have moved out so the property is surplus to their needs,” Mr Smith said. “I think they’ll be looking to stay in the area.”

Buyers looking to build their dream home, or build a lower density development are expected to bid at the auction of the tennis court at 58 Were Street.

The property at 60 Were Street, a five-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom house with garden surrounds includes some of the home’s original features.

 

The asking price for the home is between $3.5 million and $3.8 million – and even though the property is larger than the tennis court, it is covered by a heritage overlay.

Both properties are close to Brighton Beach, the Were Street Village and some of Melbourne’s most prestigious schools.

The home is being sold by Marshall White in conjunction with Kay & Burton.

Two auctions will be held on March 30 – the first for the tennis court at 11am and the second for the home at 1.30pm.'
