Bayside Living

We are considering a move to the Bayside - Wynnum or Manly or surrounds.  We have 2 teenagers - currently living in The Gap in Brisbane but finding it very clicky and missing the sea breezes!  Questions - is it safe, is the State High School good - just the general feedback would be great.  Cheers

Hi Jane

Not sure a move to the Bayside will remove the feeling of "clickyness"  - I think that is a general Qld thing as Qlders are very insular and tend to hang out with friends from primary school and rarely extend their friendship groups.  We don't live in The Gap but know a lot of UK  and NZ expats who do.  They tend to gravitate to each other and socialise as the Qlders are not welcoming.  The Gap State High has a very good reputation and excellent results which may be hard to match on the Bayside in the State system.  Wynnum can be a bit rough in areas hence it is cheaper than Manly. The only thing I think you'll gain from a move to this area is the sea breezes....

Hope whatever decision you make makes you happy!

Hi Loopylu,

Thanks for the response.  We moved from Perth 4 yrs ago and we were closer to the sea there, think we did more there than we do at The Gap!  We have experienced The Gap State High and yes it has a great reputation but just too big for our child and just not the right fit!  Fantastic school if you are gifted.  Reports that the state high school in Wynnum has improved greatly under the new Principle.  Private can be considered in the area if this school doesn't deliver.  Have heard that Wynnum has some rough spots but I guess most suburbs do.  Appreciate your feedback.  Cheers

Hi. I’m interested in this too - The Gap and Redlands (Cleveland/Thornlands) are the two areas we’re looking at settling in. We’re still in the U.K. at the moment, although my hubby has recently gone over with the intention of setting things up for us. I must say, I quite like the idea of sea breezes living bayside, but area is also very dependent on how good the schools are (hence why we were also interested in The Gap). Cleveland District SHS seems to be pretty good? Ours aren’t in high school yet, but our eldest will start year 7 next year.

Hi W20,  we currently live in The Gap and have a Yr10 and about to join Yr7 attending The Gap State High School.  It is a big school with over 1500 students, lots of new buildings and infrastructure going in to cope with the intake numbers.  It is now a strictly catchment school.  Our reasons for moving Bayside are we miss the breezes and wanting a different school, smaller and more focused on assisting the 'average' student.  I'll let you know how we go after the school interviews at Wynnum High School.

Hi Jane, hope you settled in the bayside living and liking it. Can you give any updates on high schools there? I have 2 girls 10 and 14 and so confused as both Manly and Wynnum schools look good. Planning to move there in a few months.
