Aussiebird Posted January 5, 2019 Share Posted January 5, 2019 Hello, My husband has just raised a question so i thought i would put it on here as there is such a lot of posts on here with regards to a RRV! And possibly a lot of confusion. He said if he got a 1 year RRV but for whatever reason we wouldnt be able to make the move within that year, but he made a trip for a couple of weeks, does that mean he would have to apply again and would only get another 1 year RRV? He said sometimes life takes unexpected turns that are out of anyones control so he is curious as to what would happen. Thanks in advance. Once his one-year RRV expires, he will need to make a new application and they'll make a judgment based on whether he has genuine strong ties to Australia. He would need to demonstrate substantial ties, but there is no requirement to demonstrate “compelling” reasons for absence unless he has been away for 5+ years. However, as other posters have said, the longer the absence, the harder it is to demonstrate substantial ties. Having an Aussie partner is a good start though ... Your husband is just coming up to his 5 year expiry. He could apply for a RRV now, but the best he will get is a 1 year RRV, and you can't possibly move within that year. Is that right? In that case, wait. There's no point in him applying for a RRV until he's ready to travel. He'll get no extra brownie points for keeping his RRV continuous, in fact applying for one, not using it, then applying again, could possibly backfire. Just bear in mind that cases that don't meet the residency requirement can take several months to process so don't leave it too long.
