Government talking of cuts to skilled migrant numbers

At long last they seem to have realised that Sydney and Melbourne are getting really crowded and the infrastructure is lagging behind.  They have realised that some states still need more people so it may be that only Sydney and Melbourne would receive a lower migrant intake. They won't be able to police it of course, they never can.  Not the brightest of bunnies, sadly.

The problem is I see areas around us and they can’t get any staff. A neighbor had a job for a backpacker, it qualified for 88 days and she had one response who told her $30 wasn’t enough and he wanted $45.

I know a number of farmers throughout Australia and it’s the same with them. One of them today said he had two staff, an Asian girl 34kg and a big butch uk tradie. Their job was to plant trees in a row, both the same. By 2pm the Asian lady had finished. The English Backpacker was a quarter of the way through. He got fired. A number of them think if they work slower they get more hours towards their 88.

At one point there were so many people wanting to come, they wanted the Australian experience, they didn’t care about money they would use WWOOF (sp)

I was listening on the drive home and it seems that they want to ensure that people to move to where people/jobs are with the emphasis on regional and that the obligation would be to remain in regional for 4/5 years (can't remember the number of years exactly.

The farmers around the Devonport area seem to employ Pacific Islanders (male) to do the field/orchard work.  They are very hard workers and always seem happy and cheerful.  For picking and packing fruit and veg the Pacific Islander females are doing most of the work there - also Filipinos.  There are a few French, Brit and German backpackers but they are in the minority.

If only people would stay in the regional areas and help build those communities.  They won't though- Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane seem to draw them in like a magnet.  There is no way on earth they would police the regional areas, not capable of it.

Well they can if they make it a visa sponsorship requirement that you are employed and live in the region.

People move IMO for two main reaons - lifestyle, which is mainly offered in the big cities, and family, who may already live there.
