Shipping personal effects from U.K.

Hello:

Hope someone can give advice on shipping: our only daughter lives in Adelaide and is a Australian Citizen now, we hope to apply for a bridging Visa and have Visa agents in Adelaide, our shippers in the U.K. say they can’t ship until we get this Bridging Visa or a letter of intent!! Some of the items belong to our daughter and our Grandson, the shippers say that we can’t ship using her name because she’s already shipped her goods once and that there would be taxes!! Our question to you all is, can we ship on a tourist Visa or do we have to wait, can we send our effects in our daughters name? We want to play by the rules but the shippers have said it’s around a 10 week journey, hope you can help, no one seems to know.

regards.

On a tourist visa, you are entitled to import only a small amount of goods necessary for your visit.  To ship your worldly goods while on a tourist visa would be very unwise, as it would flag to Customs that you are planning to remain in Australia regardless of whether you get a further visa (which would be illegal of course).

You should be aware that you are not guaranteed to get a bridging visa, so it would be unwise to ship before the award anyway.

As for shipping in your daughter's name - I'm not sure about that, perhaps someone else will have more knowledge.
