leighmarsh151084
Hi, would anybody who has sat the electrical skills assessment have any revision notes/drawings that I could possibly have? I've not done much on motors and all previous threads I can no longer get access to the drawing of the dol needed in the practical.Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

leighmarsh151084
Thanks mate, have you sat the practical?
Jsmull87
If you have a bit of time before your test why not buy a cheap DOL starter from the wholesaler and put on a plug top. For the test you have to show the mcb for control side and there is remote em stop button to wire in.
Jsmull87
Yeah passed it in November. DOL is ok if you learn it. You have to draw the diagram then wire it up and show it working
leighmarsh151084
Yeah thinking that if I'm honest, so on the actual test do you have your 3 phase plus MCB for control side? What else was involved on your test? Who did you sit it with? Thanks again
Jsmull87
Science and principles paper is a nightmare because 1. nobody bothers with any of it after college and 2. the questions are quite poorly written.
Jsmull87
Test is 4 parts 1. Theory paper 2. DOL starter 3. Domestic install 4. fault board of domestic install
leighmarsh151084
Yeah, I know what you mean, I had a quick look last night and wondered how the hell did I past these back then lol. I have 6 weeks till the test.
leighmarsh151084
I'm doing mine at the down under centre with future skills. Hard to find much help as all threads seem to be closed. So to mirror what is required with the motor, what kits is needed? Dol starter, thermal overload, start/stop, and emergency stop also did you say? Jsmull87
1.Theory - mainly science and formulas with some safety thrown in and questions about motors. They give you the formula sheet and good idea to show working as they will give some marks if you are close. 2. Motor as describes. Draw your version of above then wire it up. All accessories are pinned to a board with some having fly leads. Just take your time and think about it. 3.You have to do a very simple cable calc. Then connect up some sockets and a two way switch. Just the 2nd fix then test the install. 4. Faults like disconnected earth on fluorescent fitting or bonding loose.
leighmarsh151084
Sounds pretty simple but seem to be absolutely terrified about it and has made me doubt myself lol. Think it's mainly because it's for the whole family and not just myself. Is this diagram I have managed to find now like what you have said with the mcb? Jsmull87
Just get a dol starter with overload. What stuck in my mind is all stops in series i.e mcb through NC overload then remote stop and lastly local stop. I think there's only the one start button and the hold on contact. These are wired in parallel
Jsmull87
Good diagram that because he will ask about the links shown in the bottom right. How to connect star and delta and ask you to read the motor plate for which it should be.
Jsmull87
Down under centre did do a revision pack but it was 50 notes. Shame as only threw it out a couple months ago when i sold the house or you could of had it along with the dol and motor i acquired.
leighmarsh151084
Ah ok got you, as in the terminals- u1 w1 v1 etc?
Jsmull87
Just beware that diagram you got doesn't show the overload contacts. Where you based?
leighmarsh151084
Was it a proper book or was it printed A4 with revision notes on it? Heard it was the later but might have to still invest if it's going to help. Have you been granted your visa?
leighmarsh151084
Gloucester, how about yourself?
Jsmull87
Star all the 2's or 1s are linked

Jsmull87
The motor I had was star but they have two of each board. They mix it up, so if there four people you will do one of the above each and cycle round. Makes it harder to cheat I suppose.
Jsmull87
Yeah it was printed. I'm in Wrexham. A bit closer i could of met up with you and gone through it over a beer .
Jsmull87
Its not that bad. The guy testing is pretty sound. Stay over the night before if you can afford it. Long day and you get your head right. I started mine earlier than the letter said so managed to get the train station in good time.
Jsmull87
Not had the visa yet. Case officer asked or more info end of August (which was already there) so got to wait 28 days now before they look at it again. Been a long process but wouldn't part with the 3k the agent wanted so brought it on myself. Nearly there though. Where you going to head to when you get yours? Were thinking adelaide.
