Guest The Pom Queen
Lightning Ridge is off the beaten track so not somewhere that you would probably be passing through whilst travelling Australia. It is 727km from Sydney, 730km from Brisbane and around 1,180km from Melbourne. Accommodation wise, if you have a caravan you have a few options available, for those who need a motel then your options are limited. We went to the Outback Resort and Camping. It was run by backpackers who had no customer service at all and we were not made to feel welcome. I thought accommodation was steep for the quality we received. It did however have a bar, restaurant and pool on site so I’m sure that’s what draws most tourists there. Lightning Ridge has a few shops selling opals and other tourist products along with a Super IGA for the essentials. There is also a hardware shop if you have forgot to bring your fossicking gear. There are a few cafes scattered around but be warned they are all over priced. We ordered a takeaway pizza, a tea, a coffee and it came to $55. Here are some photos of our time there
Bobj
Good to see the bottle house still in place. Might look at that next year...Or, the Yowah/ Eulo area. Or, Lakefield Nat Park... Or Staten River. Cheers, Bobj.

It’s no fun being stuck in the mud in a Mazda sport or hitting a kangaroo and damaging the front end, bonnet and light Here was the view when I tried to open my door whilst stuck in the mud, needless to say it took 4 four wheel drive vehicles and 8 strapping guys and they couldn’t get us out for hours. In the end they went to retrieve some plastic ramp things and they worked first time. Oh dear, us amateurs. We could have been stranded for days lol.
