SUPERSTARDJ01
Hi, We move in September can I claim any uk tax rebate?
Jon the Hat
Assuming you are on PAYE, your payroll will have pro-rated your tax free allowance across the year, so will only have used 5 months of it by the end of August. Applying the remaining 7 months to your existing earnings could net you around £1300 refund if assuming you pay base rate tax, and your earnings in the 5 months uses up all the £11850. https://www.gov.uk/tax-right-retire-abroad-return-to-uk Edited June 12, 2018 by Jon the Hat

Consequently a higher rate tax payer will be able to get an even bigger refund as their actual earnings will only be 5/12ths of the level they were taxed at. Of course if they have a lot of other income that hasn't been taxed the refund will reduce and may even be replaced with a tax demand. SUPERSTARDJ01
It's for my wife she's only a midwife so less than 30k p/y, but as we won't be here we don't want a letter saying she's owed a refund, would she need to contact the tax office in April 2019? Or would they process it before?
Alan Collett
The tax repayment should come through before the end of the current tax year. I would send the P85 to HM Revenue a week or two before you depart the UK. Best regards.
