Pickfords Pet transport

We are getting quotes for pet transport; a dog final destination Brisbane.

We have just had a quote from Pickfords and it seems pretty competitive compared to the favourite on this forum, wondering if anyone has tried them ?

Pickfords are generally not cheap though so I'm a bit suspicious that there maybe hidden costs.

I’d go with a specialist pet shipper every time personally. But that is me.

Tbh in all my years on the forum, this is the first time I have ever heard of Pickfords pet shipping. They can probably come in cheaper if they are quoting with a shipping package.

If you have read lots of good reviews and feedback, have total confidence in their service and are happy to entrust your dog to them, use them. If not, find a company that you do feel confident using.

I have never heard of them doing it, but think a experienced company ran by vets is the best option

I understand what you are saying re Vets running the business but our experience of vets in the UK in general has not been a particularly happy one. Integrity has been rather lacking but that's just our experience.

Not all specialist pet shippers are run by vets are they? There are a few options to look at if thinking of using one.

Depending on where you are in the UK, you could look to other very reputable more local options.

I've no idea if it is a new service or not and this is not as part of a larger shipping package....... I'll keep looking.

As much as we love the dog I have to find a cost effective method. £6500 all in seems an awful lot to me.

Have you tried Golden Arrow? Also if you are in the south west of England I know of a shipper based near Bristol with many years experience of shipping dogs overseas.

Also, if he is a large breed, that sound about right all up. Quarantine isn’t cheap and there is also onward transport if outside of Melbourne.

We used Robin at Airpaws

to bring our dog over from the UK three years ago. Being a small independent company, he answered all my questions, managed my anxiety, which was high and I only spoke to him, so, no room for errors or the need in-repeating information.  He had intigrity and was honest and his cost was very competitive, around £ 3.500 then, our dog was a wheaten cross, a bit smaller than yours. He is worth a chat.

Thanks Lara

I'll check that one out as well, there are far more companies doing it than you might imagine.

We used Golden Arrow and they were brilliant - we had left our boy with them in the UK and were on the way to Oz when our vet rang me to say they had lost a blood test - we had done the vet work etc Frantic emails to GA saw them do new tests courier them off to Weybridge ( think thats right ) and get our boy on his scheduled flight I would have been panic stricken if GA had not sorted it so well We have a Shar Pei by the way  known for anxiety etc but he was fine

Golden arrow have quoted and it's competative, we will/would most likely go with them. The reassuring advice they offer is the best so far and has cleared up a lot of questions.

However a good friend has offered to adopt the dog, a very generous offer but emotionally it's not going to be easy to do.

Love this dog but he is 11 now and i fear he will not cope well with the hot weather....

Unless you plan to have him live out in the backyard 24/7 then I’d imagine he’d be fine. Our dog lives inside and heat isn’t an issue. We walk him early in the morning and later in the evening on hot days. And keep him off the tarmac where possible in hot weather.

Agree with Snifter, the heat should not be an issue. We have gone the other way, our little one was born in Oz and when he was eight we moved to the UK, he has struggled more with the heat here! And we live in central Scotland!!! The only difference is that here we can take hime for his morning walk later.

It breaks my heart but I think we will now leave him in the UK the home on offer is with a very good friend and his wife (a couple of very active retirees) meaning they can give him the love and attention he needs in the last few years of his life.

He also knows them very well so thinking of the dog rather than us it just makes sense really.

That and the seeming issues renting with a dog in QLD......

Actually doing it is going to be very hard, we did leave 2 dogs in Australia when we left 10+ years ago but they were farm dogs more than anything and were too active (and occasionally antisocial) for the UK burbs. That was hard enough but this will very probably devastate this hardened old farmer...
